    System shuts down, won't boot

I am working on a HP Pavilion 8140, pretty old, so the owner tells me that he turns it on and after the win98 splash screen, it turns off? I originally thought maybe CMOS battery, changed that, no luck!I am thinking now that it is the psu, any other ideas, it is 266, 48meg ram running 98se. Thank you in advance!

Maybe PSU, but more likely Windows needs to be renewed - one way or another. It sounds like a software issue.

Start up with your Boot disc or Startup disk in ( without cd rom support )
At the A: prompt , type , sys c: and then press ENTER.

Take out the boot disk & restart your computer.

Get a new Win98 startup disk. Set the boot sequence to A from the Bios save and restart. Your flooy should be in, format and make a clean install. You couldn't get into windows may be because the files on the startup disk are corrupted .
