Thanks. The problem was that "karaoke mode" was set on in the Realtek HD Audio Manager. I clicked off the "X" and all is well now.

If you clone a hard drive using Norton Ghost, you cannot boot from it unless you fix the MBR. FDISK /MBR will do the trick.

There are professional data recovery services out there. Try searching on "HDD data recovery service". I used one to recover a blown system drive about ten years ago and I got back 100% of my data.
