The machine started to play dead again.
Then I thought, Dell use magnets to indicate when the lid's down.
I opened up the case (again). The magnetic sensor is on...

Indeed - I'm hoping that's exactly what it was.
If you should hear an anguished wail breaking out to the east of you, you'll know it's packed in again.
But at the moment ... fingers crossed.

Have had the board out again and there are no discrete components - no caps to go faulty!

I removed it from the machine and did a backup, which looks to have been successful.

I have an Asus P5QL-E mother board ,a RAID 1 array up and running with Windows 7 installed.
