A word of caution - Some of those devices advertised on ebay as Realtek RTL8187L devices are actually powered by a Railink 3070 chip. It is outright fraud.

I think you're right about that, but I think you're also right about having more than one issue.

Does that heatsink also cool the graphics chip? If so, you may find that there is a gap between the die and the heatsink that has to be filled with a thermal pad.

You should be able to replace it using the recovery console. Throw the XPH CD in the drive and boot into the RC.

If networking goes south after a malware cleanup, it usually indicates a gap in the protocol stack which you can correct with a winsock fix, or just open cmd and run
