Try running alsaconfig for the sound.
For such an old machine I'd recommend vector linux which is based off slackware designed for old x86 systems. It's very fast but still powerful.

They'll probably all be 9.1 compatible anyway, just won't have all the sparkle. I can't imagine any game company thinking they don't want their game to be able to be run on 91% (WinXP) of computers.
