i just recently bought my own laptop - toshiba centrino 1.73 GHz.. running stats:
CPU: 46 deg Celsius (115 deg F)
HDD: 33 deg Celsius (91 deg F)
*this is after having left my system...

i'd recommend using DVD-R. not because it's a standard, but because it works on most of the holder DVD players. figured it out the hard way when DVD+R wouldn't play on our older model DVD player
