To answer your question on how did I get my P4 to overclock that well.

I have an Antec Case(w/Antec 430 watt p/s), with three stock fans, one in front if case that is also in front of disk drive, another also in front. The third is the one on the side blowing in on video card and mobo. Also bought two extra Antec Smart fans set to blow out the rear of the case. Then there are the two on the power supply also. This setup runs real quiet believe it or not.

Cooling on the cpu, I bought the Thermotake(spelling), spark7/copper heatsink fan from Newegg for like $24.99 plus a few bucks shipping. The spark 7 has three options, I mounted the thermal sensor on heatsink option so it increases speed of fan depending on temp of cpu. I lucked out on the P4 2.4b and received a C1 stepping cpu(Newegg also), and I hear these are a little better over clockers then the B0 cpu's. Running at stock voltage on cpu and memory(memory btw is Crucial PC2700-1 stick). Running ASUS P4PE mobo. This was my first PC build, but used to build Mini-Computers for a living(10yrs). The multiplier(I believe that is the setting(I am sure you know what it is), was set to 174. I did get a little more since post but started re-booting at 179/3221.59mhz, even with a one notch voltage jump on cpu core and memory. Hope that helps.

BTW bblqj78 , I left the memory timings on auto. It seemed if I messed with these, it did more harm then good.

Regarding the P4 2.4 to 3ghz+ overclock I think I have the answer.

My current rig is P$ 2.4 o/c to 3.24ghz running a high fsb (around 270).
Asus P4P800
256mb Corsair 3500 (ddr433)
radeon 9500 non-pro

The hidden factor being the new P4 - 2.4c chip which now runs with 800mhz fsb and is hyper threading enabled!! It's basically a 3ghz chip in a 2.4 packaging and people in the know are making them fly off the shelves.

3dmark 2001 score of about 13500 which isnt too bad considering i havent clocked the card yet or performed any softmods.

I will be back with 2003 scores soon...

btw, I also have an almost identical system running with a 9700 non-pro with full mods and clocked as far as I could, and it achieved 16200 on 2001 and just over 5000 on 2003. the topend radeons really kick ***!!

Even though everything seems to be running cool at these settings, I rarely these clock speeds. The only games that seems to help at these speeds is Nascar2003/Falcon 4.0. All other games I do not see any dif at all as far as frame rates(to the eye).

My question is, do games run any faster on the hyper-threading cpus?? Also, are there any other games other then N2003/Falcon 4.0, that see any frame rate increase(or any diff in game play/to the eye)?? Any one out there with a 3 gig cpu with any overclocking figures??

Note: I can see by the posts that the 9700 and 9700Pro are real beasts!! I just could not afford one lol--RH

4136 for 2003 which isnt too bad considering i havent got dual channel memory running yet. (only 256mb single channel)

not sure if my softmod for my 9500 worked, but bear in mind i have the non-pro version so only 64mb ram.

scored about 14500 on 2001 with overclocks running. core 370 mem 310.

i think ram is slowing me down but i'll have to wait and get another stick to test out.

hyper threading is wikid for multi tasking mainly. hard to say i've noticed the difference coz this setup is fast anyway. nothing really tests it. rendering on after effects is quick too :D

I was wondering about the system you said you had a 9700 non-pro??? For the 9500Pro, the bios tweak is only to unlock the clock/mem to o/c them. I think I read on a thread that it works on a 9500 non pro also-see link below for that info.

What mobo are you using that has the dual channel memory option for Intel chips, I thought that was only available for the AMD cpu's??

I used the warp11 bios tweak for the 9500pro, try this link if you are using something else and are in doubt. They have links to both the ATI flash, ATI bios tweak(warp11), and directions on how to do it:

PS I did not think the tweak worked for me, I had to o/c the cpu to see an improvement in frame rate(and I did go back with o/c cpu to make sure the 9500 tweak worked, which it did), kind of says something for those ATI cards. I am sure Nvidia will come out with something soon to compete, and when they do, maybe the price will go down on the 9800Pro and I can afford one lol.

i have 2 machines, one in my room, one for downstairs, with downstairs running the 9700 non pro and 9500 non-pro being in my room.

I've installed the latest cat5 ati drivers and patched them with the wizzard .sys file. Also patched both card bios' with the ones u've mentioned. Clocking seems to work well, tested using the fill rate test on 3dmark 2001. (expect around 2000 multitexture for a standard 9700 non pro). I managed around 3000 for my 9500 so I was quite chuffed :D.

This new motherboard i've got kicks ****!! It;s the asus p4p800 and supports just about everything including new 800mhz fsb (allows me to clock bus speed to about 400mhz tho so... 1600mhz quad pumped!) and will support the p5 prescott intel chips coming out later this year. Also the board supports hyper threading, dual channel ddr400, and serial ata drives. Serial ata on this board is sweet as u dont even need to load up controller drivers to install an OS fresh.

Hopefully dual channel will make a nice 1000 or so diff (optimistic as always) to my 3dmark scores. Bandwidth is currently only about 3000mb/s according to sandra. Should be around 5000-6000mb/s with 256x2 dual channel config.

We'll see how it goes... ;)

That mobo does look sweet. I wish I had bought that one. I just put this thing together a couple weeks ago, but did not see that mobo you have at that time. I have SATA also on the ASUS P4PE that I have, but have not bought a SATA drive yet, and may be a few months before I do. How do you know if the mobo supports the P5 or not(again, I have a P4PE--and I do not know where to find that information at--I hope it does--please give me a link so I can check that one out). I was happy until I read about your mobo on the ASUS site :>( --RH

hehe, it's a smart board dude. I think the support comes from the new 865ipe Intel chipset and it's that which allows compatibility with the prescott cpu. It says it there somewhere on the Asus site if u have a look around.

The other cool thing along with SATA is that u can set up a RAID 0 or striped RAID config which basically allows u to hook up 2 hard drives and run them in parallel doubling write speeds. Saving up for my second hard drive as we speak :D

Back to what you were saying about Nvidia catching up with Radeon 9800 Pro, they have basically done it with the new GeForce Fx5900, but it's a bit hefty and bit pricey. Stick with ATI :D

This is a little quirk, but technically, Intel doesn't have a dual channel memory setup any more than the original pentium that required paired SIMMS had dual channel.

What Intel has is a 128bit single channel implementation, it's double the bandwidth, but not really dual channel. Nvidia's chipsets for AMD do run true dual channel, but that doesn't confer much if any advantage over Intel's wider single channel.

thats odd because there is definately a performance gain when running in dual channel mode for me. Sandra shows me about double bandwidth when im running 2x256 as opposed to just one stick.

It's a definite performance gain, because it is essentially doubling the bandwidth, however it's not really a dual channel implementation.

What happens is Intel goes from one 64-bit channel to one 128-bit channel, while the Nvidia chipsets go from one 64-bit channel to two 64-bit channels. Both provide the same amount of bandwidth from RAM to the Northbridge, but it gets there differently. Intel certainly makes better use of the bandwidth enroute to to the CPU.

LOL man, Rugor, you sound pretty techie. So, I ask any one who knows

1. Is the ASUS P4PE able to run the P5 when it commes out, it is hyperthread ready, but I can not find any thing on the ASUS site that states this(also yours DJ??).
2. Has any one run any of the Omega drivers for the ATI?? The Omega drivers are getting rave reviews, but I am (probably)doing something wrong, as they will install on my modified ati9500pro, but when I go to run the 3dbench, or games, it gets garbage, or in the case of the bench, says it can not run just about each and every mode.

I did uninstall the ati drivers and control panel first.

Hmm, I thought I saw something on that Tom's Hardware page about ATI and running the Game 4 tests. When I try it says that test is not supported. I assumed it was a CineFX or Cg engine test, which would just be on FX. Anyone know why I can't run this test with my Radeon 9700, or are my assumptions correct?

My own guess is that if you can't run Test 4 on a 9700 you are either using the wrong drivers or the wrong version of DirectX. My 9500 Pro with the same VPU onboard runs all of the 3Dmark tests.

paco, you've installed the drivers that come with the card - you'll need to download the latest Catalyst 5 drivers from ati. Your score sux for a 9700!!

Roadhog - check out the specifications section for my board and the details about the power architecture support for prescott is stated.

Sorry dj, I searched the North American ASUS site, and clicked on your board, and I just can't find the part about supporting the P5. If you get the chance, can you to a copy/paste, or send me the link?? Also, mine supports the gigabyte lan, what ever that is, I noticed it had a ton of updates for that device. Is that for cable or dsl--any one?? I have cable access, but I am paying for the slow connection, and using usb to connect(or 10/100, as no performance difference that can see on using the network card).. There site is not much for support, and do not know if is worth fooling with. If the lan is for cable, perhaps I should download the updates and test. If the lan is for dsl, I have no way to test. Thanks for any help from any one :D

The downside of USB connectivity over using an ethernet NIC for your broadband is in CPU usage rather than connect speeds. USB is a software based networking solution, and requires more CPU cycles than a NIC.

You normally get better system performance, not Internet performance from using a NIC.

Very true, however there can be the odd exception to this, for example playing a hardwarte taxing game online. The game may already be putting a large strain on the CPU meanign it can provide less juice to the USB device decreasing internet performance. As such in day to day terms there is no difference in actual connection speeds, however on soem occasions when playing games there can be a slight boost by using NIC over USB. Either way i would always give a PCI NIC the nod ahead of USB

gigabit lan is for wired network use, but the speed isnt much good unless your network equipment is up to scratch. broadband internet certainly wouldnt test these sort of connections as even usb can handle broadband on the whole.

I just installed Catalyst 3.5, and now everything is sweet. Score jumped to 3775 on 4xAGP, and I haven't even done any fiddling yet. Also playing with the ATI demos. Those real-time renderings are amazing. . . I almost cried!!!! Real-Time Pixar may not be such a dream afterall :-)

Can I use the gigabit lan as a nic, and plug my cable modem into it, or does the lan require different hardware?? That is question one.

Question 2: Now that I see that your board supports the P5, how is it that it that it supports the P4, as they are talking power design?? Does it have extra pin outs or something??

i was just fiddling about in my case and my idle temp has just gone up to 50c+!!! ARGH (think i need to redo my hsf, must've knocked it or something)

The current plan is for the first Prescotts to be released in socket 478, and then to move on to a 775 "Pin" Land Grid Array for the later models.

Yep, something is wrong if 50c at idle, mine tops out under heavy load at 50c.(or should I say, that 50 is the top temp the smart fan allows it to go). BTW, I just used the silicon heat sink grease that came with the Spark 7 hs/f, is there a need for the artic silver and others like it. Since this smart fan allows it to go to 50c any way, I can not see where it would make any difference in my situation??

No it doesn't mean that any socket 478 board will be able to run the socket 478 prescotts. I don't think anything below the 865/875 series can handle the FSB it requires, or the bandwidth.

The board will need to support the right voltages for Prescott, 800FSB, dual DDR 400, and Hyper Threading at a minimum. I don't think you will ever see a Prescott on any 845 board and if you did it would probably be a dog because it wouldn't have enough data.

I checked receipt, it has been a little over 6 weeks since I bought the P4PE from NewEgg--too late to return. That is ok though. It is fast enough for now, and I can upgrade to hyperthreading in a yr or so. So two yrs from now will just get the best mobo/cpu that I can afford at that time--Jst wish I had seen the mobo you have:(

i took out my hsf and reinstalled with new arctic silver 3 and everything - gettin my volcano 7 off was an absolute ******* too and almost put a hole in my m/board!!! :O

put it all back together - STILL 56c!!!! ARGh. switched off, came back on this morning and decided to close down all progs running in the background. BASTARDS AT CRONOSOFT with that xp visual tools software was just draining my cpu with its transparent startmenu etc. turned the prog off and temp dropped back down to ambient 32-36c.... after all that... LOL

rugor how do u know all this stuff about *everything* lol. Yea I believe the 865 and 875 will be able to support the prescott cpu , but i think the motherboard has to complement it too. My bus can run up to 400mhz which is a theoretical 1600mhz? so should be enough for the new processors. Asus boast about its capability to do so anyhow.

BTW, about ur ethernet question. I think cable modems usually plug into the computer via a normal ethernet/lan cable so if your cable modem works this way you WILL be able to plug it straight into the intel gigabit connection. You can only but try - and if it doesnt work, nevermind?

Yea I got the gigabit lan working Friday night. Figured I would try the patch. I had a bear of a time finding the right driver file with the patch unzipped. I had read up on it a little, and some others seem to be having problems with the gig/lan, but they did not mention how they were using it, just that their contact with ASUS, and the techs took a while to get it going.

Per your last post, I am not sure how the software could have made your board run that hot(If I am reading your post correctly). A heavy load should be a heavy load, and what you were running was a little hot. Just my opinion. Maybe Rugor can give us his views on that subject. Like you DJ, I am pretty impressed with the "Gor" . I have been around the block my self, some people you hear are BS, then there are the ones you kind of look at(or listen to in this case), and wait to see what they have to say next. --RH--

yea when I load that prog up it just takes off. not sure why, the transparency stuff is pretty cpu intensive i know that much - did realise quite how intensive it would be though.

i prob need more case fans too, i'm only running 3 atm. Could prob do with about 3 more. Might need to change power supply soon too :S

For exhaust fans, I like the Antec Smart fan a lot(works nice, and is also quiet). They sense the temp and run what ever speed is needed. That way you do not get any more RPM then needed(thus no more noise then needed). They also make a smart-plus fan(do not have one of those). The Smart Plus is for intake, and you mount the heat sensor where ever you want(IE hot spot). I have a very large case(Antec1080--it is pretty heavy duty and very heavy). It came with three fans. I am using those for 2 intake in front, 1 on side, and use the two smart fans I bought for exhaust. The three intakes run off the fan outlet of p/s, so they run low rpm. With the five fans, it is real quiet. Besides a Dell and Micron, I have nothing to compare it to, but I like the set up--would do it again unless I saw something that worked better. The only thing I would change it to use the Smart-Plus fans for intake(and will when the supplied three cheap fans wear out).

I am not so sure that will help the cpu temp that much. Did you double check your bios, and make sure your cpu/memory voltage is correct, along with what speed it senses for the cpu fan. My spark 7 cpu runs about 2500rpm at idle, but does go up to as much as 3800rpm under load(able to go 6,000rpm if needed). Do you have a program to monitor the cpu/fan temps, as the fan should increase rmp when the temp goes up(unless yours is a fixed speed).

You better find out what is up before you fry that nice mobo and cpu. Later -RH-

LOL no it's ok dude, once i turned that program off my temps went down to 32-36c, never goes over about 43 at full load, inc photoshop and flash and stuff. :D.

I have 3 coolermaster case fans, love them coz they have blue led's but arent particularly clever. Q-fan and asus probe keep me going hehe. :D

i dont dare turn my volcano 7 up to full speed because it sounds a bit like an airplane lol. all fans blow just a touch under 3k. with the 3 case fans, 1 blows inwards on to the cpu, with one rear for exhaust and one side exhaust.

Do you know what your temp is running 3dmark2003?? When I posted my temps under load, I was using Sandra and 3dmark03 as the load. It seemed Sandra put the most stress on my system, followed by the 3dmark03.
