I'm surprised OC'ing the FSB so much has so little effect. The MHz of the CPU didn't go up that much, but it definitely helps the memory throughput in other benchmarks!

3dmark 03 is not a test of CPU or memory as 2001 was, they play fairly minhor roles, 03 is essentially a test of graphics cards primarily with other components playing a poor second, there was an article i posted about a while ago that showed a PII:300Mhz with a rad 9700 Pro beating a ti4800SE on 2ghz (or around there) CPU.

If you want to see whgat difference your FSB bosot will make to real world gaming performance then 3dmark 2001 is much the better one to do the comparison with

The main reason OC'ing caused the scores to jump so much in the past was that the AGP and PCI buses were also OC'd. With the Asus A7N8X, it will keep the AGP/PCI buses at the normal 66/33 respectively.

I did overclock the CPU a little more, it is detected as Athlon XP 3200+ (11*200 = 2200 Mhz) and the score went up to 4908.

I'm going to test the limit to see how high I can go with the CPU. It would be nice to crack the 5000 mark, though I may have to OC the AGP bus a little to do that.

The AGP Bus does sod all when overclocked, bar shorted the lifespan of your card, read Cv's article on it here:

The main boost that comes from overclocking is in terms of CPU speed and RAM, and as i said, 3d Mark 03 puts very little emphasis on either of these in it benchmarks, it is almost a pure test of gfx cards only. For a more complete benchmark of all three then 3dmark 2001 is the one to use

Typically motherboards have only a certain number of AGP/PCI dividers and those buses will become overclocked when the FSB is increased. From what I have read regarding the Asus A7N8X motherboard the AGP/PCI buses will not overclock, as the motherboard will keep them at the standard speed of 66/33 Mhz that they should be running at.

I tried to confirm this myself by finding a utility that will detect what speed they are running at. SiSoft is as close as I got and it only says that the AGP "data transfer modes support 8x 4x". If there is a utility that you know that can detect that, would you post a link?

Yes i know what happens to the AGP bus when you increase the FSB, but even so an increased AGP bus does not increase the performance of the video card, read the article i linked to in the last post

Btw the a7n8x-D doesnt automatically lock the AGP, it only auto-locks the PCI, the AGP must be locked manually in the BIOS. Also, the AGP frequency and the AGP '2/4/8x' rating are unrelated AFAIK.

Running all games at 4xAA and 8xAF all the time. It is very delicious...

This may be a dumb question....but how do tou know if you are running an OpenGL game or a direct 3D game? I have wondered this before.....yes I am dumb!

You usually select an OGL render in the preferences/setup/options as opposed to D3D

As a general rule the only engines that run primarily under OGL are those written by John Carmack, those using the Quake engines, e.g. RTCW, Q3, JKII etc

There are a few others out there that have both Open GL and D3D renders, such as Halflife and the UT series, althoguh in the case of the latter OGL is not usually very well implemented and in the case of Ut2k3 is hidden away from the user as it is very slow and buggy.

Nowadays though and especially outside of the FPS genre, D3D is the primary if not only API used

I agree, overclocking the AGP port does not improve performance of the video card. It will improve throughput which can translate to better framerates depending on the game being played. Quake3 for example benefits quite a bit from an overclocked AGP port.

The A7N8X by default has the AGP port automatically locked. It has to be manually adjusted to overclock it. I have the A7N8X rev 2.0 non-Deluxe. The Deluxe version of the board may be that way.

I did a test and increased the AGP port speed three times. I ran 3dmark03 three times at each increase and then averaged the score. Here are the results.

66 Mhz: 4908
70 Mhz: 4913
77 Mhz: 4921

Minor increases, but increases nevertheless.

Minor increases that could be explained simply by standard random score fluctuations or activity of bacgroud apps. Either way, i still dont see the point in increasing the AGP bus speed which is potneitally very volatile for the sake of a negligible gain in synthetic benchmarks

Because their is no PC MARK 2002 benchmarking thread I'll just post it here. I think my PC MARK might be alittle low for what my system is putting out. Take a look at my specs and tell me what you think, should it be higher?

I dare say his graphics card is probably a bit faster. Mark 03 is heavily reliant on your GFX card rather than you system as a whole, as such you can have the fastest CPU in the world but unles syou have a fast gfx card you aint gonna score anything remarkable, unlike 3dmark2001 which took the whole system into account

Jack, to boost your score i suggest you try doing the following, resetting all AA AF and Vsync settings to disabled in the visual control panel, and then, overclockign the video card using the following method

Im using nvidia driver 23.11 I cna't upgrade pas this version for soem stupid reason, when i try to get 44.03, 40.72, or 45.23 It freezes on the boot screen of windows XP Professional....... May that cause some faulty inaccurate readings? And do you know if i can fix this problem

Phat, Allgamer had this theory which i can find sensible, but don't know the truth of,

2...... is for g2 series really

3...... is for the g3

4...... is for the g4

but i found the 23.11 was the best for my old g2mx.

I wouldnt say that 4x.xx is for the gf4 series only, however the driver optimisations in that series are mainly (if not only) targeted at the geforce 4 cards.

If i were you i would stick to a 3x.xx driver, as it will probably give the best results for your card, i personally find the 40.72's to be the best for my old ti4200, so newer isnt necessairtily best

The 3dMark03 is designed specifically for upper end cards like the Geforce FX 5900 and the Radeon 9800. If you haven't noticed the Geforce 4 Ti 4600 w/ overclocking can peak a score of about 2000, but then you put a geforce fx 5900 on a system and the score goes through the roof! they have a normal score of about 6500 and w/ overclocking it can peak at nearly 7000. of course the Radeon 9800 w/ overclocking can easily peak at over 7000. I think you guys know what I mean when I say that THIS BENCHMARK IS POINTLESS IF YOU DON'T HAVE A HIGHENDED VIDEO CARD!!! GEEEEEEEEEEEEZZZZ!

I seem to remember reading that 3Dmark2003 actually subtracts points for cards that cannot run the Nature Test (DX9). Basically, a GF4Ti4600 could score much higher if it had the hardware to run the DX9 portion. This true, Bigjakk ??

It wouldnt suprise me, i read a comparison article not so long back in which 3dmark03 scores were compared from a Celeron 300A with a r9700 Pro vs a 2ghz+ Ti4800SE system. The Clery system beat if not matched the 2ghz+ system blow for blow. This alone shows that 3dmark03 is NOT to be used as a benchmark for overall system performance, it is a test of graphics cards only, and in all reality, DX9 hardware gfx cards

That just doesn't seem possible without DX9 support. That's all I was talking about. He must have been talking about the 3DMark 2001 scores. If he was, though, that's a waste of a video card because I got a score of over 13000 on that benchmark, and I only have a G4 Ti 4200. Then again, I also have a 2.8 ghz P4 w/ 800mhz fsb and DDR 3200 memory, but that definately doesn't make sense if that is a 3DMark 03 score.

He's got his 3dmark versiosn mixed up, that'll be a score from 3dmark2001 not 2003, heck even with Dx9 support you would be hard pushed to find a card that can do 9000 3dmark 2003 marks

Yeah I know. I've only seen about 7000 w/ overclocking on a 9800 pro so I know it's nearly impossible (if not completly impossible w/ today's technology) to get a score like 9000.

I agree, 9000 is impossible with current computers.

But, to my personal scores:

I got 6900 3dmarks (2003) on my new comp.
(was going for 7000, but whatever :\ )
(possibly with the 3.4 catalyst driver, though its sorta "cheating" )
