SM Bus controller question

In device manager, it shows SM Bus Controller as an unknown device. I presume it's because the driver is not installed.
This is on a Acer 1660 laptop with XP Pro. My daughter is not real happy with this laptop because it keeps having problems, and next time, I may just buy her a new one so I do not have all the problems of installing an O/S and drivers etc.
I downloaded drivers from acer, but can't seem to get one for the controller, so it will work.
I'm not sure this has any bearing on another problem, but this laptop is really slow booting up, and running programs. It has a 3 ghz P4, and 1 gig memory.
Any ideas?

sm bus controller is part of the chipset drivers.

did you use the acer restore discs or not? they should have included the factory drivers and apps.

laptops usually boot slower than desktops because of the slower hard drives.

Laptop has a 4200 rpm hdd vs a desktop having a 7200 rpm hdd. So yes, they do boot up a lot slower.

This was a used Acer, it did not come with any software CDs, so I bought a XP Pro OS and looked for drivers online. Got all but the bus controller driver.

Ah, I figured the story was something like that.

If you installed the chipset driver, remove the sm bus controller in device manager. then allow the system to redetect and install the driver.

if that doesn't work, maybe try installing the drivers via windows update. it has worked a couple of times for me.

Sometimes the chipset driver includes the SM bus controller and sometimes you need to download the driver from the Intel or ATI website.

Look in Device Manager > System Devices. Is there a lot of Intel stuff there?

I don't see any chipset drivers there, but there is plenty of other stuff.

That system uses an ATI chipset, not Intel.

It may be just the GPU. Those are the only ATi drivers I have seen for this model. I can't find a lot on the Aspire 1660. It's like they were all thrown in a dumpster and everyone tried to forget about them.


I thought that you were going to buy new? How much did this thing set you back? Can you return it?

The GPU is integrated into the ATI motherboard chipset. The ATI driver should include the sm bus driver.

... if you've downloaded the "Catalyst for integrated chipsets" package. The regular Catalyst package has nothing but the graphics driver.
