If you copied the windows folder, that'll never work. You'll need the cab files off the cd.

Actully..win98 only looks for 1 file when it upgrade frowm win 95 and I am prettysure its "setver" off you win 95..if this is right ,just throw this file on to the new HD

Besides being technically illegal, you can not just copy the files from one system to another and expect the second one to run. The registry files on the first system contain information based on its hardware and software configuration, which is undoubtedly different from that of the other machine.

The reason windows95 won't boot on the computer you copied it to(I assume the harddrive was blank?) is because it needs some files from the root of the C: drive(io.sys, msdos.sys,drvspace.sys, dblspace.sys) in order to boot.
Windows9x will usually work in two different computers if you swap the harddrives.

Microsoft says that win98 looks for something like nine files selected at random from a possibility of about 110-120 (if I remember correctly). In practice, it seems to prefer to start with a "particular" file for each system. Once it finds that one, it immediately verifies several other, without your realizing it.

The Win98 install looks for 2 files:
Win.com
Winver.exe
They bloke above is right, you need the root directory system files as well. Get a boot disk from a working copy of Win 98 and use it to boot the machine that aint working.
Type:
A:
Sys c:
This will move the system files onto the second machine.
You may also want to copy the System.1st file from the original machine onto the root of the second machine.
I can't help but feel, your looking for a headache further down the line using this method.

First of all you'll need a WIN95 boot/system disk (the same version as is on the crippled m/c). Onto this you copy the program SYS.COM from the COMMAND directory/folder in WINDOWS.
You then boot your sick computer from this disk. At the A:\> prompt enter
SYS C:
As already posted this should copy the WIN95 boot files (IO.SYS and COMMAND.COM) from the floppy to C:\ Assuming your neice just attacked the root directory/folder this should enable your system to boot up again (at least to the C:\> prompt).
To test if this will work change to the WINDOWS directory/folder and enter :
WIN /D:M
This will attempt to start Windows in safe mode. If this works you should be ok to boot without a floppy into Windows. If not you should boot up hitting F8 then SHIFT-F8 (after the boot option menu comes up) select NORMAL and tell us where in the step-by-step process it comes up with an error message.
