setting cpu!
hi
im putting together my own pc, and i have the abit kg7 lite 1800xp 512mb ddr 40g hd, and would like 2know if any one can tell me what the temperature of the cpu should read, at the mom its reading about 40-42c or about 104-107f, is this about right?
Also i would like 2 now what 2 set the mulitplier and fsb too.
the fsb is it 133 at the moment, 3:3:1 or use 4:4:1
multiplier goes from x5 ----above x13
thanks for any help

AMD XP1800+ runs at 1.53gHz (1533mHz).
1533/133=11.5 multiplier for the cpu
Curious, though, why not let the mobo bios self-detect the cpu and set the multiplier.
Not sure about your reference to 3:3:1 or 4:4:1... do you mean the divisor for the PCI bus? Or, are you referring to memory timings?
Regarding your temps... are these idle temps or is the processor at full (100%) load? What is your ambient (room) temperature, and what is your motherboard temperature?
Example, my room is at about 21°C, my mobo temp is at 23°C; at idle, my CPU temp is usually 18-19°C higher than the mobo temp (e.g., mobo=23°C, CPU=41°C). At 100% cpu load, and mobo temp at 23°C, my CPU temp is 51°C, or about 28°C higher than the mobo.
For your temperatures, they seem reasonable for idle, outstanding if they represent a CPU at full load. That is, unless, you are in a meat locker, then your CPU temp should be much cooler.

The temps look good to me. XP's run cooler than the Thuderbird's. My 1.4Ghz TB runs at about 51ºC under load.

Your idle cpu temp seems good but not great given your processor and the fact you have your case open; you will want to test it under full load (running something like SETI, using 100% of the processor, for an hour or so, to see what your full load temps look like).
You cannot overcool a cpu... people have been using watercooling and Peltier coolers, getting temps below room temp... I've even read articles of super-overclocking putting mobos/cpus/ram under chilled liquid refrigerants.
Get the bigger fans... just make sure you connect them to the proper power sources... don't over-tax the connectors on the mobo, use fans with the 4 pin connectors coming from the power supply wherever possible.
On my TBird (1.2 OC'ed to 1.4) I have a 120mm bottom front blowing in, an 80mm on the cpu, the mobo chipset has a small 40mm fan, the video card has a fan, I have a 120mm fan top back sucking out, a slot blower in one of my empty slots (adjacent to the video card, to help draw that hot ar out); the Enermax power supply has two fans of its own (one interior sucking in from the case interior) and the exhaust blowing out from the top back.
Even with all this, I still am thinking about adding a blowhole/fan on the side to blow exterior cooler) air directly onto the cpu from outside.
Let you pc breath!!!

I don't agree with the pc shop guy. If you really want to do some serious overclocking, there are water cooled cases that will keep the processor at room temperature.
One another note: IBM's ex-competitor, Amdahl, started using CMOS cpu's and would drop the temperatures down to sub-freezing. I don't remember the numbers, but by doing that and increasing the clock speeds, they were able to "overclock" the processors and produce more power than they could if they didn't put some heavy-duty cooling in place. I was lucky enough to sit in a seminar and listened to Eugene Amdahl discuss the engineering behind his proposal. Pretty neat stuff.
The CMOS cpu's used in mainframes today are no different than what Intel and AMD are cranking out, other than their designed to handle very large workloads.

The man in the shop is talking aut his ****!!. Of course it carnt be to cold. its just weather you can stand the noise of all the fans.
I have a 1gz t bird Athlon an have temps in the region of 24c system, 38c Processer. This is with 1x 80m case fan out, 1 x 80m case fan in. Cpu fan and power surply fan.
Advrage room temp 18-20c and run Seti 24/7.
ps Also this is over clocked to 1.1gz and mx vid over clocked 15%.

Do the world a favor and go back to that shop and *****-slap that guy. What a moron.
