How to combine 2 internet connections for double speed?

I was wondering if there is a way to combine 2 broadband connections to double bandwidth. I know not long ago there was a special modem available that has double modems internal allowing dual dial up connections simultaneously. And I think I've heard that you can even install 2 modems in a PC and connect both at the same time if you have 2 phone lines.

I'd like to order DSL for my second phone line and combine it with the DSL I have on the first to double the speed, but how would it be done? I have a router and a network in place already, what else would I need?
Sounds like a great concept if it's possible to make it work...
