asus k7m 900mhz tbird cmos prob.

    I have an asus k7m 900mhz tbird. win98se, 256m ram.
System ran fine with athalon classic 700mhz. Upgraded proc. to 900mhz tbird, runs great but about half the time i get "CMOS/GPNV Checksum Bad
Press F1 to Run SETUP" during boot-up.
I then re-enter the cmos stuff, save, exit. Windows runs, everything great from then on. When it doesn't give me the cmos message and boots it runs perfect. Normally problem happens when i "restart" windows.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks, Tony

Try changing the battery on your motherboard, these go flat aftewr awhile, and as they are used to store all of the information in the BIOS, it can lose all of your settings if you turn it off, and the flat battery does not have enough poere to keep it going.

This is definitely a battery power issue, but your motherboard is relatively new, so also look for possible shorts in or around the battery holder. (Blow compressed gas into the holder)

The hardware monitor in the bios says the battery voltage is 3.2 volts. Do you still think i should change it? What is even more strange, is i never had this prob. until the new proc., if it was the batt. wouldn't I have seen this with the old proc as well? Thanks for your help.

I agree with your thinking. That's why I suggested you look for a short (possibly created while installing processor).

Your bios may be reporting the power trickle that maintains cmos settings when system is plugged in that limits drain on battery, substantially increasing battery life (up to 7 years in some cases)

i'm not sure the mb even supports the tbird at least not without
a bios upgrade. surf here and scroll down to slot a

    http://download.asus.com.tw/mb_alllist.asp

check the "note" on the far right - it mentions gpnv

be very very careful doing the bios is not for the faint of heart
it can be an easy way to ruin a board

the 3.2 voltage is for the mb ( 3.3 5.0 12.0 ) not the battery

The beta release km137.zip provides OEM Thunderbird support. I believe Thunderbirds are properly supported by km1009.zip, though there are some issues that the beta release attempts to resolve.

Assuming no shorts are found, I'd flash the bios to km1009.

    Good Troubleshooting, Dave-Harper.

Have you tried going into BIOS and resetting to BIOS defaults, (save and exit), then gone back in and restored setup defaults?

That's how you would resolve this error on an Intel motherboard with the same chipset and processor.

Tried the bios reset and flashed to km1009 still same prob. - I read somewhere that the tbird over 800 had a prob. I have a 900. Im about ready to put the proc back on ebay where i got it and live with my 700 classic.
When ever this prob. occures the bios reverts to default configuration ie. pci video, no usb legacy keybd + mouse support, smart off, etc.
Why would it only happen on a restart and not a cold boot - baffled. I also tried the beta bios you mentioned - same prob.
    Thanks for your help.

Last suggestion for me. Disable NVRAM/ESCD Updates in Plug and Play BIOS properties.
