when i understood you the right way, you want to format your
harddrive in order to reinstall the Operating System.

so, if you're using windows 9x, you can format the harddisk
    by using dos prompt.

    - set up your BIOS to boot from the CD-rom drive first
    - boot from the windows CD or win bootdisk
    - select to boot the computer with cd-rom support.

the boot loader will check your system in order to
install generic cd-rom and SCSI drivers.

after this, you will get this:

    a:\
    - type: d:\ (or the letter your cd-rom drive has)
    - type: cd windows (depends on OS version, in win ME: cd win9x)
    - type: format c:
    - then you will be asked if you really wanna do this. just say yes!

remember: all your data will be erased! make shure you did a
backup of all your important data. also make shure
you have all the drivers you need! (modem, vga etc.)
for some hardware you may not need to install further
drivers because windows already has them.

    - now, you have to reinstall windows. when the formatting
process is over, change to cd-rom root directory and type: setup

windows will guide you through the installation process then!

hope these few hints may help you

problems may arise with sound, though. Aureal drivers are included in the OS, but since there were so many manufacturers, the driver may not be the correct one. so you'll have to copy the "correct" drivers to the hd, remove the old sound card, then "force" the OS to load your new drivers. this also happens with SB64AWE, SB128, SB256, SB512, SBLive cards.
There's really only about three types of Aureal drivers and you can run a program from their website that will tell you the correct one.
