I just rebuilt my hard drive with Win98:
AMD Athlon Thunderbird 1.4Ghz oc 1533Mhz
    MSI K7T Turbo Limited 6330
    512Mb PC133 SDRAM
    20Gb 7200RPM Western Digital HDD
    Geforce3 Ti 200 oc 220/500
    onboard sound VIA AC'97
    Win98

    6542

I was getting around 5400 before this rebuild. I'm not sure of your particular situation, but a fresh system seems to help the score.
