Direct-x woes
Hi all.
I've been having big problems with Direct-x on my home built machine. Basically when I run Dx-diag the direct 3d test will not run properly. I see the cube but the faces are not mapped onto it correctly. Also when I run 3d-mark 2001, any direct 3d object doesn't draw properly. For instance the dragon in dragothic is just a jumbled mess of triangles.
This seems to be a motherboard problem as I've tried a different video card in the same machine with the same problem. I'm using the latest chipset drivers, and bios.
System details: AMD Athlon 1,333
Gigabyte GA-7dxr
256MB DDR Ram
Abit Geforce2 MX400
Direct x 8.1

Did you try another nVIDIA based card ? With the same drivers ? Otherwise the problem might be the mobo, as you already pointed. Tweaking different settings might help, but you should really replace it, if you still got the warranty.

ND, correct me if i'm wrong but couldn't he just download X8.1 again and it will overwrite? Isn't it possible there was a glitch in his download of directx? And likewise, i wonder if the settings (advanced setting) for your AGP might be the culprit.....sorry, i'm an eternal optomist where motherboards are concerned--maybe its the mother part that makes me think that is the last thing that could be wrong LOL.....

Do you have the latest graphics card drivers, and also the Bios for the card?

I've used the latest drivers for all equipment. Mobo, and video card. The 2nd card I tried in the system was a rage based card with the same problems. Also I've tried the MX400 in another system and it works fine. I forgot to mention in the first post that the problem exists in both Win ME and Win 2k. I have looked for a bios upgrade for vid card but Abit don't have one that I can find. I'm thinking the solution is either a bios tweak as ND pointed out, or a replacement motherboard. Any other ideas??
Thanks for all the replys to date
Johan.

What kind of OS are you running? If its 95,98,98SE or ME you should use DX8.0a, problem solved! There are certain probs with DX8.1 running on OS listet on Top.
If youre running XP, make shure none older Drivers are installed and monitor is not listed as "Standard" or "Plug&Play".

Ooops, sry!W2k is NONE Gaming OS and only works properly with8.0a just like the other none XP´s

I am using WIN2000 PRO with DIRECTX 8.1, for gaming and find it to be a GREAT OS SYSTEM FOR GAMING.
I had XP and didn't think that it was that great.
I won't be using XP again until at least service pack 2, and when there is better drivers for it and also game patches.

Update. Problem solved!
Hi all. Have finally solved this one. I managed to get hold of an Athlon 1600xp to try after swapping out every component on this machine. Problem disappeared with new CPU. So I guess that was the prob all along. Hope I can get an RMA on this CPU.
Thanks for all the help
Johan
