SOS - AMD T-bird CPU over-overheat
My computer has some problems when it is running. I checked the temperature in BIOS, it is 68C. Then I run a program to monitor the CPU temprature it said as follows:
turn on the power and run:
1 min: M/b, CPU: 31C, 41C;
3 min: M/b, CPU: 34C, 54C;
5 min: M/b, CPU: 39C, 58C,
10 min M/b, CPU: 42C, 63C;
30 min M/b, CPU: 46C, 65C.
45 min: M/b, CPU: 47C, 67C.
I think that is too high and causes the computer to be unstable and freeze. Does that overheat damage my CPU already? The computer still can run in Windows 2k.
Now what I can do to cool the CPU to <43C. What kind CPU fan I should to buy to fit on my CPU and efficiently cool the CPU? My computer has AMD T-bird 1.2GHz processor (Socket A interface), K7AMA mainboard. In addition, do I need to cool M/B? My computer only has one fan for CPU, no other fans inside the computer.
I have other componentsrunning in the computer: 12X DVD/40x CD Rom Drive (BDV 212B), Yamaha 16x10x40x CD-RW Drive, PixelView GeForce2 MX200 64MB w/ TV Out, 32-BIT 3D PCI Sound, 1.44MB 3.5 internal Floppy Disk Drive, 10/100 on board network Interface Network Card, and NEC 100M ZIP Drive).
Thanks

Inadequate or improper heatsink problem. Are you using the POS heatsink that comes with an athlon retail package? Also, you should look into getting a bigger case or cutting some blowholes to increase air flow. For heatsinks, I'd recomend either the GlobalWIN CAK-38 or Zalman CNPS-5000 extreme ($30 to $40 plus shipping at www.plycon.com ). They both work great. If thats too expensive for you, a thermaltake volcano 6cu is also a good choice. Whatever you do, DO NOT BUY AN ORB! Tt's orbs are some of the worst heatsinks for what they cost. Besides not doing a very good job at cooling, they aren't repairable if the fan breaks because it is mounted inside the orb, and nobody sells a replacement for them. With a regular performance heatsink, all you need is a new 60 mm fan and you're back up and running.
