Win2000 looses system files
I have installed win2000 prof. on a Athlon 1.2 system. After setting everything up, and running this system for a few days, it starts loosing system files. Or files start getting corrupt and it wont boot. Whats the deal? Anyone else seen this problem?

Can happen with cpu overclocking, memory errors, PCI bus overclocking, IDE controller problems, etc.

Parts listing: Optiquest Q95 19" monitor, WD Caviar WD200AB 20GB EIDE ATA/100, Epox KL133M Socket A mb w/ 1.2GHz Athlon processor, 56x CD-Rom w/ UMDA 33, Island Pro keyboard, PS/2 Wheel Mouse, 1.44 MB Floppy, 256MB PC133 SDRAM 32X64 168 Pin DIMM, ATX Mid Tower w/ 250W Power, Linksys 10/100 Fast Ethernet Card, & Ball Bearing CPU Fan w/ Heat Sink.
This system was built to put the Microsoft Windows 2000 Professional platform on. I can do a clean format and install of the operating system. Install all the drivers, and do all the service packs and upgrades. After use for a short period of time, the icons all turn into black boxes.
Rebooting the machine gives me the startup error: Windows 2000 could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt: \WINNT\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEMced startup options for Windows 2000, press F8.
I have been unable ro repair this file in all attempts. The only fix I have found so far includes reformating the drive and reinstalling the OS. Then the problem re-occurs once the system is operational again.
Any new suggestions? Could this be due to the ATA/100 HD? Since Windows 2000 does not support ATA/100.

You could check HD integrity with the utility you can download from the WD web site. If the drive checks out OK, and you're running it on a standard IDE33 controller, and the PCI bus is not overclocked, the drive, then, would not likely be the cause of the problem.

Hard drive checked out fine. I removed the ATA100 cable and installed a standard IDE cable. Reloaded windows and am up and running with no problems. Thanks for all your help!
