neat program idea can any one help
I need a program that will look for my ip address
on boot up compare the new ip address against the last ip verified if it has changed email myself the new ip.
The reason I need is I am away from home alot and work with a laptop but I like to take remote control of my home computer I am working on turning it on by wake on lan and going to have to find another way incase ip changes. maybe wake on modem there might be a use for it now My Ip changes about once a month.
If you know of any programs like this or what a good simple language would be to attempt writing this, I would appreiciate any suggestions a friend of mine suggested win batch.

I have one that works great. It's called a wife.
Well, seriously, I don't think it would be that hard. Use whatever language you know. Most will have tcp packagaes, or even use a command line like winipcfg to get the ip. Then, the simple matter of storing the old, comparing the new. Probably store in a text file, ini, or registry. Then, email.
sounds simple, well, maybe not that simple. I'll give a go at it, but no promises.

or..I'm sure there's a freeware or shareware one out there.
try the shareware sites.
I like download.com the best
Also, dynip does something like that, but i think it is more for running ftp's on your computer

You can use a service by www.tzo.com that will give you a static IP even if your ISP assigns a dynamic IP. A client runs on your PC that monitors the IP address and then resets the DNS if your IP address changes. You connect to your home PC using a standard URL. All information is at tzo.com.

BillW,
You've correctly identified the problem and a possible solution.
Remote accessing a PC with even a slightly dynamic IP is problematic, so get a static IP.
To programatically interrogate an IP address and send email, Java would be the easiest, imho.
