On the assumption this is a PS/2 mouse that worked OK up to now I'd suspect the mouse has died and isn't responding to signals from the computer.

Best bet would be to try it in another computer and see if it's recognized.

I'd scrap it, new ones are cheap these days. The problem is most likely with the internal electronics rather than the cable. Unless your cat's been chewing on it (as my daughter's did).

Its a cheapo Trust AMI single scrole PS2, however i do have a pal who's an admin and maintains the systems at my school (hes a member of staff) and he reported similar problems with a logitech mouse once.
The most annoying thing isnt that its just the dead mouse, but that it was locking the keyboard as well ---- oh well - ive got a nw one now anyway

    Cheers

Bummer. But look at the bright side, you have a great opportunity to get an optical mouse. On a budget, get the Logitech Optical for about $19.95. It's very smooth and has a scrolling wheel. The Microsoft Optical goes at $29.99 and if you have larger hands, the Microsoft Intellimouse Explorer goes at $49.99. I have the Explorer on mine and the Logitech Optical on my son's system.
