    linux issue:

    mandy 8.1

after much frustration i got the nvidia video drivers installed finally. i see the nvidia eyeball looking at me when i boot. but when i try to change my resolution from 640x480 to 1024x768, i test it and my screen goes completely black therefore forcing me to reboot. any ideas?? i think i should be able to run it in 32 bit correct?? or am i missing something.

ps. i didnt see my exact monitor listed when i installed (sun microsystems 19") so i just picked a non-interlaced monitor that can do 1024x768. not that that should matter but i just figured id mention it. thanx

Once you have installed the nVidia drivers in Mandrake 8.1 if you try to use the Mandrake utilities to change your screen resolution I think it will give you some trouble because it will likely try to overwrite the /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 file that you custom edited and it will not include the changes for "load glx" and "nvidia" that you made. You would probably be best off editing the file again manually. You can also toggle through available resolution with the <Ctrl><Alt><numpad "+" or "-"> keys

Here is my MDK 8.1 XF86Config-4 file -for 1024x 768 16 bit color you might give it a try (posted below) -just paste into advanced editor and save as /etc/X11/XF86Config-4 or change the appropriate modeline/screen section:

    Code:
    # File generated by XFdrake.

    # Refer to the XF86Config(4/5) man page for details about the format of
    # this file.

One more thing -you can edit and change the device name from "RIVA TNT2" to whatever you want - the nVidia drivers work the same for the whole TNT -Geforce family.

thanx for the help. i used most of the same settings you had already and just used it as a guideline. needless to say a quick reinstall took care of my problem. i now have it at 1024x768 with the drivers installed.
