Why are AMD K6-IIIs so rare and expensive?
I am trying to get an AMD K6-III processor. But I can't find any. And I heard they run about $80. Why are they so rare and expensive? Is it because they had defects? Did they not work well?

The K6-3's are, in fact, far more expensive (and slower) than the K6-3+. The only difference between the two chips is their core voltages (K6-3 was hotter) and speeds (K6-3+'s were produced up to 500 Mhz, K6-3 topped out at 400).
The reason K6-3's are rare is because they were hard to produce, few were made, and they stopped production relatively quickly. Your motherboard may be able to handle a K6-3+ or a K6-2+--I recommend looking into them.

I,ve only been able to find the K6-3, not K6-3+. Is the K6-3 ok? And why where they hard to make? What is the voltage of the K6-3 and K6-3+?

The k 3 400 is not a bad choice and will overclock to 450 at 2.5-2.6 volt over 2.7 is a bit risky ,forget about 2.8. Stock is 2.4! I bought my k3 400 years ago and they cost $125 so $50 on price watch is not a bad deal. The k3 450+ and k3 475+ and k3 500+ are going to be very hard too find , sometimes though a shop could be clearing a few out!

If your MB supports 2.0v, you most likely can use a K6-2+ (same as a K6-3+ but with only 128 KB L2 cache). It is $35 at Tiger Direct.

Don't mean to gloat (well, maybe a little ) but check this out... sweet deal (should be last post).
Keeping in mind that things are generally more expensive in Canada compared to US I think this was a good deal.
I found it through this little app found here: PinPost (shameless plug for a Canadian company right here in Vancouver).
Good luck on your hunt

I found one place that sells the K6-3s. Though I don't really want to give away where it is sold, until I buy mine. Also, it is almost $80.

Actually 450---what made the K-6 3 great for business apps at the time was the cache---In addition to the 64KB of L1 cache, the chip had 256KB of L2 cache on the chip, which operated at full speed, it could also supports a third level of cache on the motherboard if the manufacturer implemented it...worked great in business apps but was no better then a PII 450 for gaming...
Ive had one since its inception---6 months ago they were available on Pricewatch for 200$ (non +) for some reason, not now...

I have a AMD K6 - 3 450 , built my first system with it and a P5A.
I've been told to hang on to it too. Waiting on the KT266A boards and will retire this chip. I must say it has served me well! Not much of an overclocker, got to 475 mhz and that was it. The core just runs to hot! Built the rig in '99 and really has been trouble free. It and my GTS can't really get up there in frame-rates with the big boys. Hope my new T- Bird will do the trick ( wanting to get in to O/CING).

Amd K6-III+
V_I_R_U_S,
If you're mobo can support the K6-III+ or the K6-2+ you'll have a healthy super socket 7 performer. I'm running a 450 K6-III+ @ 600mhz. (5 x 120) on another computer. This one is running a 450 K6-2+ at 523mhz. ( 5.5 x 95). The key to the extra performance is the +.
