Kt266 + GeForce2 MX400 = Crash!
I've posted this problem previously. I know you guys must
have some idea of what to look for.
The only two games installed on this machine both crash after
about a minutes playing time, Diablo II and Madden Football
2001.
Here's the system:
Epox 8KHA (VIA KT266 chipset)
Athlon 1.4GHz(266)
256MB Crucial PC2100 DDR SDRAM
Gainward/CardExpert GeForce2 MX400 64MB
Soundblaster Live!Value
WinME
If I update the VIA 4-in-1's to ver. 4.33 (from 4.29), things get
worse. If I try to update the NVidia drivers to 12.81 the system
crashes, only sooner. More often than not, both these games
will freeze after approx. one minute, and then crash to the desktop, or just freeze altogether.
The Gainward site absolutely sucks. No information at all, just
the downloads; but which "set" to choose??
When I download and unzip, there's usually 3 folders(w/ .cab
and .dat extensions), that won't unzip at all.
I have not looked into the mobo BIOS yet. I did notice that
there were only 3 files listed under Driver Details for the Display Adapter in Device Mgr.(Also says it's "working properly" w/ "no
conflicts").
Also noticed that Soundblaster and video were both sharing
IRQ 11,along with a couple of other things.
This is a system I built for a friend,so I'm not looking very
adept at PC building right now.
All other applications,(Word,Excel,CD Creator, etc.), run fine.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Is there a good trouble-
shooting guide out there? Thanks.
- Bill

This could be heat-related. Both the CPU and the GF2MX could be overheating. Try leaving your case open and pointing a room fan at it to see if the problem goes away.
