What is the best DVD Player for Red Hat Linux 7.1??
Anyone here who can recommend where I can get it?? And since I'm new to linux, can you tell me what exactly is the file to get or you can email it to me @ mykel1109@cs.com ... Thanks

For linux DVD player the best (IMO) is found at www.linuxvideo.org you will need to download the stable release RPMs for libcss, OMS, and OMI -and install them in that order. The program is then started by the command omi-gtk.
I have also used xine to play DVDs in Linux but found it somewhat lacking, namely, not able to the files in succession.
Sorry to tell you this, but there is no DVD player for Linux that is as smooth as the Windows counterpart.

I agree with the two resident guru's
However Xine is also worth a look.
It worked great for me when I found the correct version. However in my experience you need a functioning 3d accelerator to get a good frame rate & support functions like full-screen.

pbharris thanks a lot dude, one thing though.. I still haven't received your e-mail... Anyway, as I'm still waiting for your email, I tried downloading and installing Xine... Installation was smooth, only one problem.. Since I'm new to Linux, I don't know how to play the DVD.. I opened the Xine and I'm trapped on what else to do.. I tried the documentation on the website, but I think I still haven't mount my DVD drive.. I can mount it as CD but that's it.. Whenever I try to play, it says no DVD device found.. or sometimes no audio found.. I'm totally lost about this Linux thing.. And another problem I have, I can't see my Fat32 drives.. I tried mounting it and it says, no mount point.... Help please... Anyone?? And pbharris you already are a Linux guru... I'm the newbie on this Linux....

Did you try "mount -t fat32 /dev/hd?? /mnt" where ?? is drive and partition number? That works on mandrake.

Hum, I will try the other email address when I get home from work. There is about 2 MB in attachments I think.
also,
as root in a terminal type ls -l /dev/dvd
if nothing comes back or an error try ln -s /dev/hdX /dev/dvd - this will create a link (aka alias or shortcut) to a dvd device.
Replace the X with the letter associated with the DVD drive
IDE primary master = /dev/hda
IDE primary slave = /dev/hdb
IDE seconary master = /dev/hdc
IDE seconary slave =/dev/hdd
You can also use linuxconf to mount the fat32/ntfs partitions - it is under access local drive

thanks pbharris.. My fingers are still crossed.. I hope I'd get it.. Anyway, I don't know if you're familiar to Xine but I'm having some problem with that one while waiting for your email.. I can't mount the device as DVD coz it can't read the dvd as dvd when I insert a dvd on my dvd drive... What should I do? I'll try to do what you said and let you know what happens.. Thanks again..

lemme see, how did i get xine working...
i know i did not mount the the DVD to get it to work, but you probably can mount the DVD w/o harm.
I needed to install the DVD decoder.
I assume you have the default kernel from RedHat so it should work with your kernel. also, what kind of vidio card do you have? else, it worked prety good right off the bat. i used the rpms for this.
you can try to get the files from, it is SDSL, not really fast, but not too slow.

hey mykel,
are you using the driver from NVidia? They should be installed. if you are not using them greb them off, they are on NVidia's web site:
http://www.nvidia.com/view.asp?PAGE=linux
I see have to update my xine, i am using version 0.4.3...
else the messages llok like what i am getting except you have many more pluggins than I do. when you hit play list does box come up and there are options for DVD, when you hit this does the list of dvd titles come up? something like dvd://XXXXXXXXX
does anything come up at all?

BTW - did you get the latest xine as a tarball (i.e. ends in *.tgz of *.tar.gz) or in a rpm? all i saw at xine.surgeforce was a tarball.
