Definitely the best for gaming is the voodoo! Better drivers, compatibility, etc. The savage cards are plagued with poor driver and optimizations. But for dvd's, I have heard that the Savage are quite good but the Voodoo never gailed me at dvd's!!!! So....

I'd agree with that. You could always go for both! Savage4 AGP and Voodoo3 PCI should be fine. There are other benefits to this as some games (actually only one - UT - to my knowledge) support extra good graphics under S3 MeTaL. Anyone know anything about this as I haven't tried it yet? As for the V3, I found it overheated with the plain vanilla heatsink so you may need to got a fan to stick on it...

From the viewpoint of a Savage 4 owner.......

STAY FAR AWAY FROM THEM! Mine has given me tons of grief. The drivers are hopelessly unstable. I'm using some tweaked drivers now, but it's still spotty at times. 2D speed is ponderously slow (you have to see it to believe it)! 3D speed is OK, but nothing to shout about. UT with the MeTal API looks sweet... but who cares about eye-candy when the @#$% thing keeps crashing.

If you've got a fast enough processor (400+ MHz), then the advantage the S4 has over the V3 in DVD rendering is moot.

I need to add a few things

Well I have a 1.4ghz athlon. I thank you guys for the Replys but I am still confushed on what to use. I use my computer for watching movies and when the times calls diablo2 lod. The problem is I am stuck with both of the cards. When I bought my athlon +kt7a-raid + sound blaster live platuim = 0$ left for a video card. I was gona add this to my post but I ran out of time had to goto work.

The voodoo3 is a PCI with 16mb ram
    The Savage4 is 4x AGP 32mb ram
It seems to me the more ram would be the best bet? I know the voodoo has a locking up problem on my system. I guess it overheats. Any ideas for fans on them?
Also one more thing before I get out of here..
I have a mild overheat problem on my athlon from what I read I run like 116º F and max load of 123º. Is that a problem? If so is there a way to make a good home made fan? I have tried a few high price fans, about the same results.

I have both and am using the VooDoo 3 3000 as primary card in my wifes machine. I had a DVD in it and used the svga cable out to watch tv quite often. Got tired of the cables so bought a player for the A/V system. Try the latest drivers and DVD software for either card. I think the Voodoo will still beat the savage4 in most things. Do you have the original install software? Also search through web sites that specialize in graphics and performance for drivers.

If you are playing DiabloII then the Voodoo3 is the way to go considering D2 was designed around glide.

Also the Voodoo3 (Which I run) has no probs with almost any game I've thrown at it, UT up to 1024x768x16Bpp no probs. Voodoo3 is a very good card, as for Savage, I've only ever heard bad things about it, such as reversed colours, maps not appearing correct (poly's all screwed)

    Definately V3

Just want to throw my vote in for the Voodoo. For the money it is an excellent card.

The Savage4 are really very buggy and very pathetic in terms of its performance compared to the Voodoo.

    I'd take the Voodoo3 anytime.

Savage 4 will probably edge out the Vodoo3 for DVD performance, I've not had any probs on stability on the computers at work, a few of which are running Savage4's.

I have heard that UT (CD2) has very good MeTaL suppaort, but quite honestly if you are even vaguely concerned abotu gaming, I'd go for the Voodoo3, the glide support is what you need!
