Spare a thought for the rescuers

It has occured to me that the rescuers at the WTC and the Pentagon, are under a terrible strain at the moment.

Not only are they working their **** off in perilous conditions, but they are labouring under the ever increasing certainty that their efforts are almost sure to be in vain.

The frustration of putting so much effort into the rescue and finding so few survivors, not to mention losing so many of their own, must be enough to push some "over the edge", I just hope individuals and the authorities realise this (I'm sure they do).

    Well done to them all.

My thoughts go out to all the rescuers of all ethnic backgrounds and all religions who are working hand in hand 24 hours a day.

You are right CM, I wish this could go without saying, but at present sadly it cannot.

Yes your right Scorpio, but as long as there are people out there who's views are born of ignorance and fear there must be others who must do their best to remind everyone that we are in this together.

Being a firefighter myself you guys bring up a very big issue.. I have been trying to get my fire dept here to send myself and some other up. even though they have plenty of help now those rescuers (heroes) can only keep this up for so long then they will need a break.

A similiar thing is under way here in Ireland. We are assembling a team at present.

The reality is that these firefighters will not be able to keep this up forever, no matter how hard they try. They will need time to gather themselves afterwards.
Append that to the fact that they already have an operational commitment to the city in general. Fires and other emergencies don't stop to mourn.

I for one have no hesitation in volunteering my time, effort, and skills to the F.D.N.Y.

    Justy.

    Justy and Vagabond,

Many of us feel helpless to act. If you are interested in donations (obviously Justy is), several threads contain links. My thread below links to the New York City page and gives an address for direct donations to rescuers' families.

Please also post in the thread so it doesn't get buried.

Also, as I'm sure you know PayPal, Yahoo, and Amazon.com are all accepting donations to the American Red Cross.

At the present time over 55% of Dublin Fire Brigade have applications to volunteer to go to New York, and take our place as determined by the commanders on the scene. I am but one of many.

Friday was declared a national day of mourning in Ireland. Such a day means that all emergency personnel get paid a double allowance for their day ( Double pay ).
We have all donated that days wages to the New York Fire Department.

We have determined, and will continue to be determined, to help in any and every way we can.

On behalf of the firefighters of Dublin Fire Brigade, and the Irish Fire Service in general, Justy.
