My guess is these files are related to Carnivore! I punched out a short batch file and put it on a DOS boot disk to get rid of them. I mapped out NT4 and W2K and will be building batch files for them this weekend.

I allways thought Big Brother would be our overbearing government. Microsoft has just jumped in and declared itself Big Brother #1. This is truely scary stuff. Well I have to go now and delete, delete, delete.

I wonder what else is hidden and yet to be found.

I've known about the stuff in this article for a long time. That's why i created a batch file (see below) to clear out those files. Fortunately, i've never used outlook, so i'm at least safe on that end.
I made a batch file called 'clear.bat' and put it in c:\
This is what i have in 'clear.bat':
    DELTREE /Y C:\TEMP\
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\*.TMP
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\HISTORY
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMPOR~1\
    DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\

I also had a line in the autoexec.bat file:
    c:\clear.bat
But, that doesn't work on windowsME. If anyone knows how i can get that to work, please post it here. It'll save me a few mouse clicks.

Also, if someone knows how to make a batch file or something to delete the registry entries, please post it here.

Well, I'm not shocked, I knew about the e-mail, and one of the reasons I quit using Netscape was because I suspected the history went into the registry.
At least I am glad I never gave in and used Outlook. Pegasus Has been my email client for years.

OK, I read at least one misconception so far! These files and directories CANNOT be viewed or removed will Windows is running! The files are "IN USE" therefore cannot be screwed with! The ONLY to view or remove them is from PURE DOS! To view the files in question, refer back to the article, to get rid of them, I've created several batch files below.

Before you get started, you will need a bootdisk which can be created with Win95/98 or through DOS by typing "format a: /s" without the quotes. You will also have to find a copy of Deltree, on 95/98 it is located under c:\Windows\Command and copy it to the disk along with the appropriate files below.

You will need to download the Readme file, autoexec.bat, and the cleaner file for your appropriate Operating System and copy them to the boot floppy. The autoexec and Cleaner files will have to be modified by you using NotePad...very easy!

Be sure to read the Readme file before getting starting!

    autoexec.bat

    NT4.0

    W2K

    Win95/98

Well, if anyone reads this far down, your time would be better spent reading the posts in the tech forums on this topic.

Moebius- simply put a link to your batch file in your Startup Folder. I made myself one a long time ago that clears the Windows/Temp directory and the windows/recent directory.

Socal sent me a URL for a program that will remove these files while in windows. I d/l'd and tested the beta version on NT4 and it works fine!

Ruahrc - i figured that out shortly after i posted. I have a habit of answering my own questions ;-)
    Thanks.
Anyone know if it's possible to write batch files or something to remove registry entries? Or is that too dangerous?
