Looks like they are on schedule. The AMD roadmap show the Morgan core being released in 2H01 (2nd half of 2001).


Hmm it looks like it is unlocked too.


And it has the SSE too!!

Instructions to this new core, this is 3DNow Professional and is very similar to the SSE which the P3 is running currently.

Rhino, most if not all current Durons will run at 133/266FSB mine has been over 150/300.

Yeah Jad, I hear ya there. When I moved from my Slot A to this new Epox 8K7A +, I just bought a Duron 750 for $40, and its running smooth as silk at 7 x 133.

why would you want a 1ghz duron when you can have 1ghz athlon with more cache and running with a 266fsb

The price. The Athlon 4 and MP are just too expensive when compared to a Duron with the Morgan core.

It's like asking why would anyone want a Celron when they could get a P3, P4 or Xeon.


As I said my Duron has been over 150/300MHz FSB. Rhino also has his at 133/266. I have yet to see a Duron that fails to do 133/266fsb.

Last check on pricewatch and you can dig up a 1Ghz T-bird 266FSB for 8 dollars more than a 950Mhz Duron. Are they going to raise prices on the athlons again or crazy drop the prices on Durons? Anyone know what they're planning on pricing them at?

i just bought 1ghz t-bird 266fsb on newegg.com for $93 and that was a retail box

Please read the article and you will see this is not a Duron based on the current Spitfire core but one based on the Morgan core which is based on the palomino core with SSE and Data Pre-fetching added.


The cheapest price for a Athlon MP 1GHz is $158 plus $15 for shipping from pricewatch. I could not find a price for the Athlon 4. If this Duron sells for $70-80 then it is half the price of the MP 1GHZ.

Another review and a couple of quotes from it.

For months overclockers have been happily reaching 1GHz with their Durons. It has become perhaps the most overclocker friendly CPU on the market. Finally AMD has officially released the GHz Duron. It is just a simple speed bump? No, the GHz released today is the Morgan core Duron. It is the little brother of the Palomino we have already seen in the Athlon MP and Athlon 4. Let's take a look at this chart to show some differences between the Morgan Duron and the previous Spitfire Durons.


Using the default voltage I overclocked the Morgan to 1.2GHz with the 240MHz FSB. My next try was 1.3GHz, but it would not post. I'm sure I could have gotten higher with a boost in voltage, but I'm quite pleased with the easy 20% overclock.


As expected the Morgan core Duron receives the same benefits from SSE and hardware pre-fetch as the Palomino core Athlon 4 and Athlon MP. With that performance boost AMD has further widened the gap between it and the Celeron. If you are looking for a budget CPU the Duron is the obvious choice. It has no technical competition, only marketing competition. If you are looking to upgrade remember to watch for bios updates that will allow your motherboard to support the CPU, and make sure you reinstall windows to take advantage of SSE.
