This is real bad news. BeOS is the best desktop OS bar none. The management self impaled themselves on the internet appliance bandwagon, now we may never see R6. A new version coupled with the antitrust action against Microsoft would have allowed them to fully enter the mainstream OEMS. Too bad, I'll have to use Linux as my alt OS now.

It's sad that those of us that are the end users of operating systems and applications really don't have a say in anything anymore. We're spoonfed OS's and apps and it doesn't matter if we like it or not. BeOS is going the way of DesqView/X and OS/2 - OS's and GUI's that had a future, but were thrown to the side for money's sake - not for any other reason but greed. Microsoft is literally ruling the world with OS's that are bloated and ridden with bugs and holes, but no matter, they'll rule just as AOL has taken over. Sheer marketing and market strategies are what run the world. There is nothing in there about making the most of users's computers or hardware - there is nothing in there about making things easy or making things bug-proof or making things better. It's only a matter of what's making the most money and who can attach to that bandwagon.
I for one will continue to use BeOS just for the fact that it works well for me. I can only hope that Palm will have some intellectual philosophy directed at keeping it alive and making it better and bringing it back into the desktop arena someday.
"An OS that boots up in less than 20 seconds? Yes! That's BeOS!" - can't find a version of Windows or Mac that can do that.

Whoa, Kilgore, I think I get your point!

Guys, any more news on this? I'm keen to switch back to BeOS, after a year or so off of it (system crash and never got back to it, whoops!)...
I recently bought v5.0 Pro and have seen that the updates appear to support NTFS... is this true read/write support and if so, how safe? IOW am I going to trash the MFT on my NTFS disks?
And also how good is the BeOS support for HPT370 controllers?
Any comments / help appreciated...

That really is bad news to hear. BeOS was a really nice product-- but superior products don't always survive. It is the only OS I never had to fight with to get up and running-- it even booted and ran without a glitch when I moved the boot drive to a completely different machine (different mb, video, etc). Excellent stuff. Sad to see that it's PC development wont be continued. Open Source! Open Source!
