they are arrogant bleeders, who do everything in their power to stifle competition and it's generally the users who suffer.

but let's face it, IBM would still be kicking sand in everyone's face if things hadn't gone pear-shaped.

mandrake 8 is the greatest thing you can install on a pc. after unreal tournament

    IBM calls MS arrogant

IBM's overwhelming endorsement of Linux has been a refreshing surprize. One thing is for sure, IBM is not spending a billion dollars just to slap Microsoft in the face - is it apparent that someone at IBM believes in a Linux future.

Perhaps the best thing for Microsoft and worst thing for Linux would be if MS began to offer applications for Linux -limited applications- where when you went to use a very popular feature such as "Justify" it would display an error message stating:
"Sorry, this feature is only available in the Windows version of MS Word."
But since the ruling not to split up Microsoft, it is not likely that Linux will be in danger of application sabotage anytime soon.

Are you interested in trying Linux? I highly recommend either SuSE Linux 7.2 or Mandrake Linux 8.0. Mandrake Linux is geared toward new users and without a doubt the easiest Linux on the planet. However, SuSE Linux also offers a very easy install and numerous configuration tools. SuSE's current 7.2 product offers the most recent in Linux innovations inspite a release numbering system that might mislead you into thinking that Mandrake 8.0 is more recent.

    Disclaimer:

Linux does require some reading and there is a learning curve. If you are not prepared to learn anything new and different from a typical Windows operating system then Linux is definately not for you. If one of the most important uses of your computer is to play games, then you would also be better off sticking with Windows for now. Before you start with Linux it is highly recommended that you backup your current data because a bonehead mistake on your part could spell the end of your Windows partition -though this is unlikely.

Well, at least I am not "unregistered" and available for legitimate questions on Linux -or Windows.

Windows 9x - 32 bit extensions and a graphical shell to a 16 bit patch to an 8 bit operating system, originally coded to run on a 4 bit microprocessor, written by a two-bit company that can't stand 1 bit of competition.
CMonster says, "You can't choose the right operating system if you don't have a choice."

    LOL CMonster.

I would like my next computer to have an AMD CPU, VIA chip set, and run Linux. I can do that . . . right? I mean if it's OK with Mr. Gates. I wouldn't want to cause the end of capitalism, the USofA, and the free world.

Anyway, I'll keep Win98 around to play games and for my dialup banking. At least until that can be done through Linux.

On a totally different note --- in short ---
    Registered users good!
    Unregistered users bad!

Why shouldn't you foster competiton by excercising your right to choose -this is what capitalism is all about isn't it? Both OS models can coexist can't they? Although Microsoft might have to adjust a little, because they hate the idea of anything free. Has Microsoft ever been in the habit of giving away software on mass scale other than Internet Explorer? And giving away IE was not about "a natural extension of the operating system" (if that were true Windows would come with a built-in spell checker). But free IE was part of a greater effort to gain control over all things Internet -simple minds will not understand this. Competition makes for better products, and in a capitalist economy companies go into and out-of business all the time ~sink-or-swim, dog-eat-dog.

I don't know if by dialup banking you mean that your bank has given you some kind of proprietary connection/interface software that runs only on Windows, but I do online banking with Linux all the time. With BofA 128bit encryption on the browser is all I need.

There are also some "quicken like" programs for Linux, notably "gnu cash."

I use Managing Your Money and dial an 800 number to connect to the bank. The program is Windows based and was provided by BofA. Just yesterday I looked to see if they offered a Linux version, but there isn't even a mention of dialup banking on their WEB site. Must not be offering it to anyone new.

Maybe I'll switch to online banking. Then I'll only have to wait for Linux versions of HalfLife and UT.

Well, I loved the article, thanx again SysOpt folx - esp. the quote you guys seemed to like as well ... ""We had that arrogance a few years ago ... You learn from that."

My step-sister earns her daily wheat-product rations by selling IBM's new server systems. And easily breaks her multi-million quota every QUARTER. Now - hands up all of you who thought that one day, IBM would be on the side of the "anti-American and destructive to intellectual property" forces? Yah - I was fooled too .

Maybe when MS said (in a diff. context), by saying that GNU/Linux/Open Soure == viral software, they meant "viral" in the context of "viral marketing"? IE (not the browser, the Latin thing) : Everybody is "catching" on.

    OH - I kill me ...

BTW - can anyone tell me -
Go Microsoft, i need one plataform and one integrated OS. No more magic solution and aplication, no more badly test program, no more driver and dll's hell.
    GO MICROSOFT GO.
if this means love or hate for Windows? I think s/he meant GO AWAY MICROSOFT GO AWAY, and I am mis-interpreting hir opening and closing lines. It sounds like "Yay Gates" and yet reads as "BOOO Windows". Confuzzling...

I love my Mac box, my Windows box, my Linux box, my girlfriend's eyes, and I really have to leave the house more often, I am not gonna argue about any of these points with anybody .

God bless us, everyone, in other words.

And 'nuff said to (dual) boot.
