Sony PS1 gets Linux
Yeah, but what do you do with it??
-
This is realy cool, but I too have to ask why...
-
I'm not sure about that myself.
It could have potential in countries where PCs are impractical due to environmental or economic reasons - the PS is cheap, robust, and everywhere.
With the proposed modem and HDD, you get a decent games machine with internet connectivity and the ability to run basic PC apps - wordprocessing, programming etc...
It's a good attempt to use existing tech (do most people really need a 1GHz machine for email and typing the odd letter?), but finding the market will be the hardest bit, I think.

1) h4x0r it and run the Mother of All DDoS attacks
2) 54 million Playstations all crunching RC5
Do I get points for discussing this with myself?

First time I heard about this and tryed to go to Runix.ru, the link didnt work.
Now the link to Runix works, but the download link doesn't.
I figured I'd give it a whirl, since my PSX is sitting on my desk doing...nothing.
I hooked it up to my TV tuner cuz I had 2 inchs of extra space left on my desk, and figured my PSX would like it better there than in my old mini duffle bag.

On second thought, my PS1 does have a serial io port, I wonder what could be hacked to interface with it?? I mean come on, the cdrom on a PS1 sucks, but if you could boot it with a new prom, maybe a cheap used broken PS1 would make a good start for a thin router project, if you could interface the processor easily with other components........

I think this could be interesting. It leaves much development...linux games...and like u96 mentioned..RC5. I think this is also sony trying to show people that the PS-1 and PSone are not dead. Maybe trying to revive the spirit of the C64 in their systems? Or, if they get a bunch of people to develop this for their PS1, then the technology used here could be adapted to the PS2...hrmm....

Awsome. I have downloaded the PSX kernel but can not find any directions on how to recompile it into playstation code or making a PSX bootable cd. I hope we see some help files soon. Might be fun to play around with and I like the RC5 idea. If anyone know of more info please post a link to it. Thanks.
