    Q3 Benchmark

Okay.. so what sort of fps do you think I should be getting with a 1.4Ghz AMD in an Asus 266FSB Mobo with 512MB Crucial DDR Ram? Currently I've got a Voodoo3 in there, just until my GeForce3 gets delivered. Right now, I'm only getting 66fps at 640x480, everything maxed out. Is that right? What will I be getting once I get the GeForce3?

I went from a voodoo 3 3000 to a GeForce 2 mx400, when Q3 shows the FPS it won't go to 3 digits, but it stays pegged at 99 with high quality settings in 1024 x 768.

I think you will do more than 150fps.!
My GeForce MX in my system at 640x480 goes at 125fps.
At 800x600 it goes at 95fps, so you should get alot with the GeForce3.!

    1024x768 114.4
    1280x1024 71.4
    1600x1200 48.5

    High Quality

    1.2Bird, Epox 8K7A, MSI Geforce2PRO(12.40), 256 Corsair.

That's what I get so you should get something moderately better.

I didn't even post high resolutions (since you all should know that the mx sucks at high res.) but should get scores like camaro or maybe higher.!

    If you are curious:

    at 1024x768: 59 fps
    at 1280x1024: 33 fps.

Well... the test results are in. I just got my GeForce3 today. Now, I haven't done any tweaking to anything in my system yet... so all the hardware is running at default settings. The Q3 benchmarks were as follows:

    640x480x16bit
    texture: lowest
    geometry: lowest
    ejecting brass, etc: off
FPS: 217-224 (I ran all these a few times)

    1024x768x32bit
    texture: Highest
    geometry: Highest
    ejecting brass, etc: on
A3D high quality sound was on too.
    FPS: 125

Now, this next one, I thought was very impressive...

    1600x1200x32bit
    texture: highest
    geometry: highest
    ejecting brass, etc: on
    FPS 69.1

I can't possibly put the settings any higher, and I'm getting almost 70fps. Awesome. I can't wait to test it out on some games that really use the GeForce3's features. Any suggestions?

    Thanks,
    -Jim

Well man... congrats on the purchase!!!! I'm sure you will enjoy the card for some long time.! And those scores are about right... maybe you can do even better by updating drivers and things like that..!!

    Have you tried these settings?

    Q. How can I get the best possible image quality from Quake 3 Arena?
Firstly, adjust all settings to High Quality in the menu options of Quake 3 Arena, and then set Geometry Detail to High and Texture Detail to the extreme right hand side.

These settings were suggested by John Carmack in order to make the best use of the GeForce - type them in the console:

    /r_lodBias -2 // don't use lower detail models.
/r_subdivisions 1 // lots more triangles in curves.
    /r_lodCurveError 10000 // don't drop curve rows for a long time.
    /vid_restart
If you want to undo these settings, just select a geometry detail level inside the game.

    /r_stencilbits 8 // enable the 8 bit stencil buffer.
    /vid_restart
    /cg_shadows 2 // enable stencil shadows.
If you want to undo these settings, set cg_shadows back to 1.

However, the shadows options may slow you down quite significantly - they're not recommended if you're into huge 20 player frag fests!

P.S. Apparently, cg_shadows 2 looks "a bit funny". I've never tried it myself but I do use lodbias -2

You're right.. it gets it to chug a little more.. I ran another bank of timedemos last night, and here are the 1600x1200 results.

    1600x1200x32, textures high, geom high.
    demo001: 66.8fps
    demo002: 68.6fps

    1600x1200x32, textures high, geom high,
    With /r_lodBias, /r_subdivisions, and /r_lodCurve Error.
    demo001: 65fps
    demo002: 66.9fps

    1600x1200x32, textures high, geom high,
    With /r_lodBias, /r_subdivisions, /r_lodCurve Error, /r_stencilbits, and /r_cg_shadows.
    demo001: 36.9fps
    demo002: 35fps

So, there was a little difference when adding the /r_lodBias, but only by a few fps. The big hit to performance, like you said, was from the cg_shadows, and I didn't think it made my system look any better. Still though.. 35fps at 1600x1200x32? Thats a pretty good rate.

    Thanks,
    -Jim
