ti-83+ programming. need help!

i got a ti-83+ the other day and i was looking for some programs to put into it, but i've run into a few bumps. first, i have no clue what it means when (empty set) is, and i can't find the # anywhere, and i've checked the manual many times. i've tried substitutions, like the not equal to sign, but i can't get anything to work. can someone please help me?
