docs requesting authentication for download
Hello all, here's a puzzler for you...
A while back, after I upgraded to Office 2k, my Word documents I post online suddenly started asking users for network authentication when they tried to download or view the documents (they were not supposed to be password protected). Eventually MS directed me to Q225234 which says in part "These symptoms occur for the following reasons: The Web server is using Windows NT Challenge/Response or Basic authentication, or both. -and- Office 2000 documents are opened in a Web browser as read-write. The fix is Office 2000 SR1/SR1a".
That worked way back then. However, I recently made the mistake of uploading a single document directly from my laptop (still Office 97 on there) which made the problem recur on all Word docs on my site. I have tried deleting the document, uploading fresh copy from my big pc, uninstalling Office 2k and reinstalling (so I could reinstall that service pack) on my pc then re-uploading the doc, none of which has helped the problem. I even tried deleting the only password protected document I do have posted, but that didn't help either. It doesn't happen to everyone who tries to view the docs, but it does seem to happen to most people (including me). Sample doc is at http://www.pamsclasses.com/ids_480.htm the "IDS 480 Notes" document. (Not to be confused with the one below it, the membership list, which is supposed to be password protected so that is behaving as it should).
Any suggestions would be appreciated!
(The doc can be viewed without a username or password by hitting OK or Cancel, but it's the popup request for a username or password that I'd like to get rid of if I can.)

I tried the "480 notes" document and only got the username/password from MS Word.

Exactly the problem....the IDS 480 notes document is NOT password protected, so you should not have gotten the username/password popup at all.
-
The authentication I got was not a NT/2000 type of login.
Maybe a setting on your copy of Word is set wrong?
or
Try ftp'n over to the site and manually delete it and then resave it up to the web site.
-
Looks like you got it fixed as I downloaded both and the Note's one opened just fine and the password protected one asks for a PW when I tried to open it.
-
See, now that's the really bizarre part I don't understand...it doesn't happen to everyone. Just happens to MOST people. As a matter of fact, when it first started happening I thought people were just doing something wrong on their end because I couldn't duplicated the problem at home (although now it does happen to me at home).
No, unfortunately I haven't gotten it fixed yet.

Isn't using MS software on MS OSes the most effective and time saving way of doing things? Doesn't Bill Gates deserve to be the richest man in the world because his software has ALWAYS solved all of man's problems and has never had a "bug" or behaved funny?
I'm sure you don't appreciate my sarcasm, but I got the doc just fine. Somebody is teaching RDBMS or OORDBMS, oops just DBMS, though they make reference to OO.
Anyway, I guess I am one of the lucky ones.
Who is Pam? and is there a username/password that works?
-
Pam...well, that would be me. This is actually a pretty fun class.
There isn't a username/password that works (I guess I should say, "as far as I know"), because I didn't set one up. Just hitting cancel or OK without entering anything for username or password works, it's just if you enter anything in either username or password that you cannot view it.
I wish I could find the common thread among those it asks and those who don't get asked for authentication.

Hi Pam!
Looks like we found a MS bug between versions of Word. For what it is worth, I have Office97.
So here is my (or yours) conspiracy.
The validation is Word not NT, thanx izzzy12k.
The validation is bogus as any button will access doc assuming no username/password input, thanx to you.
Whats to do?
Save word doc as HTML and put .html up on site?
Make some PDFs?
Count students, open up word doc, File menu, Print, find the # of copies field and enter number of students, lastly choose printer from another department so you use their toner and paper. Hand out to students.
Yep, I'm a big help....

I ran into this problem before. You can click cancel and view the file. To get rid of this bug, you need to have Office Service Pack 1 installed.
-
Yes, jgargac, service pack 1 did work the first time this happened. Unfortunately this time having sp1 installed does not seem to help, hence my posting to this forum. I even wiped a drive last week, and tried it with no sp installed, then sp1, then sp2 (uploading a fresh copy of the resaved doc each time) and still no improvement.
I have a feeling I am going to end up going with qball's last suggestion...
qball-my husband heard me laugh out loud when I read your post, he came over and said "It figures, qball's in NJ-you all have the same sense of humor" (I am from Wayne, NJ...moved out to CA in 87).

Sense of humor?????
I thought that was an excellent innovative solution matching perfectly the requested requirements.
Good luck, keep posting and can you say 'correlated subquery'?
