Two important questions before we get started:
    1) Is there anything on the drive you absolutely must have?
    2) Is the drive still under warranty?

If the answers are no and yes, the easy thing is to get a warranty replacement from Western Digital.

Is it a new disk that you are installing? or you've been using it for sometime & then it stopped working?

First off, Western Digital drives arent doing too well lately. The company I work for had to switch to Seagate drives because 1 out of every 4 WD hard drives we got were DOA or got bad clusters after only a few weeks of use.

Secondly, Western Digital has a great little utility called Data Lifeguard Tools that you can get from their website to find out whats wrong with your drive. http://www.westerndigital.com

Is the drive from another system? Some systems have a feature in the BIOS for Hard Drive lock. If enabled the system locks the hard drive using hardware encryption. If the drive is removed from its origonal system after this feature is enabled then it cannot be read on any other system. The only way to unlock the drive is to put it back in the orignal system, go into the BIOS, and disable the locking feature before removing it from the system.
