New Hard drive

Hi

I just bought a new WD400BB hard drive but when i installed it in my computer it gets stuck in the POST stage, I think my motherboard is to old but am not sure any ideas how to get it to work ?

At the risk of stating the obvious, is it connected properly to the ide and power cables? Is the jumper set to the correct position? If so, find a friend with a computer and try slotting it in that.

the jumper is setup correctly and i can hear it spinning up and although i have to skip its detection on the POST Win98 does find it as new hardware and install i Fixed disk Type 80 driver for it so i think it is in conndition and that my mobo is to old

the BX chipset on the motherboard will have no problem with your drive, so don't worry about it.

Change its position to primary slave and try again.
When you enter the bios (press DEL) and go to IDE drives detection, does it find it there? Have you tried USER (with values from WD page) or AUTO?

I have the same hard drive on an Abit BH6 (440BX) with no problems. Remember to only set the master jumper "on" if a slave drive is present. If no slave device is present, leave it un-jumpered. You can also try using the Western Digital utilities diskette - the diagnostic mode will tell you which drives are connected to your pc and you can run a quick check to make sure all is well with them.

It could be the BIOS of your board does not support a disk of this size.
I had a Epox MVP3-C that did the same thing when I tried a W.D. 45Gb. Worked fine with a 30Gb. though.
Look for a BIOS update at the DFI site!

have tried user with number from WD no detection.
Auto doesn't detect it either
if i go to detect hard drive it just hang and freezes but doesn't detect.

the dignostic program can help me because the bios doesn't find it.

I guess its the bios version and i don't seem to find a update anywhere

You could pick up a Promise Ultra 66 card for about $25, if you have a free PCI slot.

By the way, ever try to overclock that puppy?
Cel 333's were good for 500Mhz routinely!

i though of overclocking but am a little afried to do it,
any majer dangers from it ?

You could try putting the drive on the machine by itself, ( take the other IDE drives out of the loop . .. ) and see if the BIOS sees it.

Remember that most WD drives, when on the cable by themselves, should not have a jumper on.

well acording to WD it should have a jumper on it but any way i got to have my other drives hooked up.
but mi question now is i read at WD site about a two jumper setup for such problems like mine and a old 3.2 Gb WD has those jumper setting printred on it, any danger to the drive if i try the two jumper special mode ? I really don't want to screw the 40Gb drive

Don't buy an Ultra 66 card. That's an Ultra 100 drive. Buy an Ultra 100 card. Yes, there are dangers to overclocking. Read about it here, and elsewhere, take your time and take small steps.

If you only have one WD drive on a single cable it should have no jumper. (Or the jumper should be in the neutral setting. If you don't know what this is, take the jumper off.) If there are two drives on the same cable, the one at the end should be jumpered "master" of MA. The one attached to the middle connector should be jumpered "slave" or SL.

Your setup should work . BUT
Try the HDs on the same ribbon connector and set up as master and slave. I have had weird conflicts with CDroms and HDs on the same ribbon. When you try this, leave the CDs disconnected and if it works connect them one at a time.
