You can play any CD-R in a player (for the most part), but unless you have a special Car/ Home CD player, you will not be able to read RW's.

suspect the problem is not the disk itself, have used diferent brands, made a few coasters, just learning to use the darn software, only suggest just keep trying, thankfully the disks are cheap. make notes as you experiment thru it. what are u using, someone here is probably using same.
I have a carryaround, car adapter, home sterio unit, my cd-rs work in all three places??? opps, should have read better, problem is the type of disk. never tried cdrws

AFAIK all CD-R discs will work in most audio CD players as long as the disc is burned as an audio disc and not a data disc.
Personally I've experimented with various brands and they all made audio disc with no problems. (PNY Technologies - Memorex - Maxell - TDK - Sony - Imation - Verbatim - GQ - CompUSA(house) - Smart&Friendly(house), to name a few)

The only times I have troubles with CD-R brands is in my portable CD player...man that thing is sensitive. Some CD-Rs won't work in it when anti-skip mode is on. Other crappy CD-Rs won't work in it at all.
Other than that, I have no problems with brands.

Most home/car/portable cd players cannot read CD-RW disks. There is a company or two that makes a cd player that will read CD-RW disks but it has to be made for it. I think IAWA makes them...? Most modern cd players can play CD-R's with no problem. If you want to play CD-RW on anything but your computer, you will have to purchase a new cd player that supports CD-RW.

The only cd player I know that can play cdrw is pioneer's new models for cars. Very old cd-players (standalone) don't play even cdr's. Well, mode1 cdr's that is, mode2 plays fine.
Use the cdr's instead for audio, they don't cost that much =)

I've used many different brands and gotten great results playing them in my pc, home cd & car stereo. My home dvd wont read cdr's though, but you may want to experience with different brands. I found the cheap brands, gave me problems. I also was reading that some older cd players (home, car) had trouble reading cdr's.

Oh yeah, I have had no luck with Sony disc's? I usually use Imation & Maxell audio cdr's.
