Best IDE CD Burner to buy

    Hi all,

I'm looking at getting a new burner as my current one (HP Surestore 7100, 2x2x6) just isn't cutting it (no pun intended) anymore.

The new one has to be IDE with the burnproof technology and has to be decently fast. Price would be probably no more then $250 to $300.

What kind of CD writer can I get for that money?

    Thanks,
    Sean

There are 24/10/40 CDRW drives made my many manufacturers such as Sanyo whih sell for $159 and TDK 24/10/40 with burn proof technology for $219. However, from past experience using Plextor burners, I would recommend a Plextor 16x10x40 with burn proof technology which sells for as low as $164 USD.

Check out http://www.elby.de/CloneCD/english/index.htm under the supported writers section. It has a list of burners with buffer underrun technology and it also tells which ones are best for copying copy-protected CD's Preferably one that can write in RAW-DAO 96 mode.

RAW-DAO 16 lets you duplicate any PC copy-protected CDs, which may be fine. RAW-DAO 96 can do this as well as reproducing Playstation copy-protected CDs.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I'll be checking out the link. I've always heard good things about Plextors.

    Thanks again.

if your willing to pay that much, I would recommend a SCSI burner, either HP, Plextor, or Ricoh

I have a Plextor 8/4/32A, and as long as DMA is setup, (I use Windows 2000 and Linux) in windows, it never makes a coaster. Never makes them in LInux either. Oh yes, I have my 30GB HDD as Master on IDE BUS 1, my PlexWriter 8/4/32A as MASTER on IDE BUS 2, and my AOpen DVD-ROM (16X) as SLave on IDE BUS 2

See here for a discussion about the new 24x drives versus the 20x from Yamaha.

Otherwise, the 16x Plextor is the way to go!

Plextor is definately the king, although (currently) not the speed king, they are the king overall...if the makes any sense

Anyhew, get Plextor and nothing else.
