Where to put my 12X burner
Hey guys i recently bought my girlfriend for her birthday a 12X burner and i quite dont know where to put it. I could put it in her 500 celeron with 128 ram, which i did and it was very flaky(many coasters and buffer was running at 10% or less throughout the whole burn process.)Or i could give her my spare P3 350 with 192 MB of ram. My question is, would the P3 computer be a better burning machine as apposed to the celeron 500 that my girlfriend is currently running. I realize that i would be loosing clock speed but i would also be gaining FSB, and a larger processor cache. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Mod w/ an attitude
I have a real nice dual P3-750 server just waiting for a kewl burner like that...LOL
What operating systems do each machine have?
Your problem seesm to be more related to the software than the hardware. Upgrade to the deluxe versions.

P3-350 ? Are you sure ?
Does your burner supports BURN-proof technology ? In that case, you can even install it on P166 with 32MB RAM
Generally, both computers will work fine with the burner, even if it's not BURN-proof, just try installing it as Master.

Hey there guys, sorry ND, i meant a P2 350. Both of the computers will be running Win98. And no the burner does not have burn proof technology. Its kind of an El chepo burner. Its an LG 12X Burner with an 8MB buffer. With that said the Celeron was really struggling making a simple audio cd using easy cd creator at 12X. That buffer never stayed above 10%. Im just curious if the Pentium II processor should be able to run the burner more efficently with a faster front side bus and a higher processor cache than the celeron. Thanks for the replies.

I know you said it's a 12x burner, but do you still make coasters if you burn at a slower speed? How many other processes are running in the background?

It seems to work better at slower speeds 8X as far as the buffer use is concerned. Its just when its at 12X that it runs very flaky. And whatever speed i run it at i have nothing running.

Why not just install a small linux system (without X) for CD-Burning? It will almost never make Coasters.

Better stay with Celery, defragment your HD, kill every possible background processes, and try not to go beyond 8x burning speed, 12x might be too high, even with 8MB buffer.
