Which IDE Channel for New ATA 100 drive

    Hi,

I have a 850 Tbird on a KT7 Board, I currently have two UDMA 33 Drives as primary master & primary slave and a Yamaha CDRW as a Secondary Master. I am going to by a new 40Gb UDMA 100 drive. I would like to keep all of my hard drives as I use my PC for video editing. my question is if I put the new drive as primary master will it be slowed down by a UDMA33 drive on the same channel as a primary slave.

Is it posible to buy an add on card to add more IDE devices. Then I could put the new drive on it's own channel.

Once again many thanks to all of you people out there who take the time to reply to these posts. I have certainly learn't alot since using this forum.

Do the motherboard IDE channels support the ATA-100 spec?
The HD will only run as fast as the channel.

If yes, the IDE channels on almost all newer motherboards support device independent timing,
so there will be no penalty in having an ATA-33 and an ATA-100 drive on the same channel/cable.
You will need to use the 80-wire ribbon cable to get the higher transfer rate.

Promise, Maxtor and others make a PCI expansion card that will also do what you want for ~ $50-100US.

Your KT7 supports only up to UDMA66, which means you can't unleash full potential of your new ATA100 HD. Yet, ATA66 to ATA100 doesn't means dramatic improvement, in fact, you could hardly see the difference. So, you can use your ATA100 drive as "Master" together with ATA33 drive as "Slave" on same channel, just be sure to use compatible 80-wire ribbon cable.

    Hi Guys,

Well what can I say, Thanks again to SYS OPT forums far some great advice. I know this board only supports ATA66, I have just built a 1 GHZ ThunderBird systm on a KT7A for a friend. I thought mine was fast, this thing rocks. It has a 40GB ATA100 Quantum drive and when we benchmarked it the results were 64% faster for the drive tests than my PC.

The only decision now is which drive, I have had IBM's and currently have a Maxtor and a Western Digital. I was thinking about a 40GB axtor Diamond+ 60. Any comments?

    Regards

    Richard
