what format do I need to convert a song to so it will play on a normal cd player and what software do I need?

Wav format. Use something like winamp, from preferences just set the output plugin to disk writer. Be sure to have not set shuffle/repeat on =)
Modern software can convert mp3's to wav on the fly when burning.
