Need advice on Hard drives

Hi all,

I need advice on wihich hard drive to go go for. Well i've narrowed it down to 2 hard drives.

Seagate Barracuda ATAIII, ATA100 7200RPM 8.9m/s 2mb Cache 40gig

or

Quantum Fireball Plus AS, ATA100 7200RPM 8.5m/s 2mb Cache 40gig.

So which is the better make of drive, i.e reliability, waranty etc.... I have heard that Quantun hard drives are made by Maxtor is this true? If it is are Maxtor any good?

Which one would you guys/galls go for?

I've used the AS Quantum and it's fine.

However the new IBM 60GXP is the better of the latest IDE drives, something about platter density, faster access time.

If you wish to step up to the NEXT level of performance, go SCSI for about $150 for 18gb and 6.6ms access time @10,000 rpm->

I'd go for the Quantum but only because my two are Quantum and are very reliable.

Maxtor took Quantum over but it seems they are still labelling the drives as Quantum. You have to go to the Maxtor site to find out about all Quantum drives.

I dare say the Seagate is just as good, I suppose it boils down to personal preference really.

Does the .4 m/s seek time difference really matter??

Also this ATA100 drive is gonna be used on an UDMA66 motherboard until i get a new one. Will the hard disk default to Udma66 and work ok??

My mate is buying my 30g Seagate Barracuda 2 ATA66 hard disk off me but his motherboard is only UDMA33, will this hard disk default to udma33 and work ok??

I've never used either drives. But Seagate makes some nice drives. I have two in my PC. 1 605MB Mode 4HD (for windows), and 1 8GB ATA33. They both have worked fine. The 8GB for a year now, and the 605 MB I just got 2 weeks ago used (for $5). What are the prices?

The Seagate is £117 inc VAT and the Quantum is £119 inc VAT.

The seagate has a delivery charge on it though of about £4.

Can anyone help with my UDMA100 on UDMA66 mobo questions??

ata 100 drives will work on ata 66or 33 so it will be no problem.

Besides working, you supposedly won't notice ANY difference between ATA/100 or ATA/66

Somewhere amidst the jumble here, is a thread outlining HD specs, lots of links and BBA made some thorough comments pertaining to the platter density and RPM's.

Seems that RPM is not the WHOLE story when it relates to access times.

Ya know that buy.com , computergeeks.com, and I think tigerdirect.com all ship to the UK.

May or may not save you some coin.

Personnally I would go for a maxtor 7200rpm 2 meg cache 40 gig drive.. I've plaed wit ha few of these and they worked flawlessly...

But if you go with either with Quantum,Maxtor, or IBM .. Never of had probs with any of them.. you won't notice a diff betweeen UDMA-66 and UDMA-100 as the transfer rates of hard drives are so much slower anyway... hmm maybe i nthe future the UDMA-100 standard will mae a a diff

in my experience, quantum drives aren't too reliable. Western Digital drives just suck, too slow, hot running, and unreliable. Maxtor is my pick, because even when you do have a problem, you can get a replace ment drive in like 2 or 3 business days. THAT'S service.

Decided to go with the Seagate Barracuda 3 40g. And all i can tell you is its superb, fast, silent and of course 40g in size.
