Was the drive dropped at any time? I have seen that error when there is a physical problem with a drive.

Use the Maxtor diag disk that came with the drive and check it for problem. If there is it will say so and give you a code for an RMA

It's possible that the drive was droped.. when i recieved it, the corner where the IDE cable plugs in was bent in, so i had a hard time getting the IDE cable to plug in.
I didn't recvieve any disk with the drive, nor manual of any kind... It was bought from "bummer". (i'll be emailing him)

I've had that happen to me once before... and it had nothing to do with a damaged hard drive.

It was simply the boot disk I was using. I never did take the time to figure out if it was the old DOS version on the floppy having a compatibility problem with the new hard drive, or if it was actually a damaged file on the floppy.

    It's worth a try?

    Format Terminated???

I've formated many drives in my time, and NEVER seen this error:

    x:>Format C:
All Data.. yadda yadda yadda [Y/N]

    Completed 10%
    ...then all of a sudden:...
    Format Terminated
    Drive Not Ready
    x:>

it won't finish the format. This is a bran new Maxtor IDE 20GB

I did finally get it to go past 10% using windows 98 setup's format.. so far it's at 18% (taking forever) The drive was Fdisk'ed and everything is set correctly on the drive!

Any ideas why i was unable to format from the command line?

    Thx,
    Shadal
