Need advice on type of Tape Backup for my system

I have a compaq server with raid 5 drives and about 60 gigs storage space. 50 gigs of this storage will be for .jpg files.

Could someone reccomend a external tape storage system (UW Scsi) that could handle this natively. I would like to use 1 tape per night doing a complete backup every time.

50 gigs to ONE tape? Ok....You will need to use something such as the DLT7000's drives which will will allow up to 70 gigs with compression.

Now if you want that 50 gig to be handled NATIVELY then your going to be look at something such as the SDLT's (Super DLT) which allow up to 110 gig natively

If you want to hit something a bit more "middle of the road" I would personally suggest the Exabyte Mammath-2 drives. Fast and stable which allows up to 60 gig natively.

Just remembered that Onstream also makes a 50 gig backup drive. but be aware these drives are SLOOOOOOOOW (Max out at 2MB/SEC)

Thanks, I was looking at the Mammoth solution but now I was thinking maybe I could get one that would be SANs and have an ethernet connection. That way I wouldn't take up a server. Just can't find one that has this for a single tape drive solution. Alot of autoloaders support it though.

I can understand your delemia. The connected to a box backups will run you quite a bit less than a stand alone solution. btw. that DTL1 you linked to is only 40 gig's native....80 gigs compressed

The HP DLT1 combines 80GB compresssed backup based on DLT technology, with low cost of purchase.

If you can afford a SAN setup that would be sweet

Just something about Onstream:

They filed for bankruptcy. Another company is taking over, but that will take awhile. I wouldnt count on any support for awhile.

We used the 30b and the 50g

The 50g physically broke, internally and the 30g started eating tapes. It ate 4 tapes before our new HP came in.

I know I could have just gotten 2 bad drives but I wont be ordering anymore.
