If I have an Idea, Who do I tell?

I am developing a new system concept. I am fearful that the person I tell might steal the idea from me before I can develop it myself. I believe my idea has a lot of potential. I am posting this because you guys are the experts at business and technology, and I am sure have contacts to people who are willing to talk to me.

    Thank you,

    TJ

    Depends what you need.
But you might want to tell someone who can help you (maybe he could become your partner) implement your idea into a business.
I had the same problem (good idea for a website and I told a friend who is in the business but who had no real interest in pushing the idea by himself.

    So...
...your ideal partner is: ME!! ;-)
At least if you need good cantacts in Europe for selling your idea. (Just sold/licensed software of a company of a friend of mine on the last computer show to three major telecommunications companies in Europe)

If you truely want to protect your intellectual property (the idea), then get a copywrite, patent, or whatever it takes to claim it as your own.

In the mean time, make a detailed writing of your idea, its plans, etc, and mail it to yourself via certified mail. When it comes back, DO NOT open it. Store it away in a safe place, like a safety deposit box. That way, you have some means of proof (sealed and dated/postmarked by the US Gov't) that the idea was yours first.

Exactly what Target told you. You can also e-mail a copy to yourself or to someone you "trust". Get a patent. I think I gave you a link to a patent form.

Alright- I'll give you a hint

I am developing a new "computer" system concept.

    This concept makes life simpler
This concept incorporates many new technologies
This concept has great market potential

I would love to expand on this but need to have those who are interested sign an NDA to insure legal protection of my idea.

actually patents are very hard and expensive to get...so be prepared for it to take a long time and plan on spending a lot of money. Then on top of this you may not even get the patent. Then if its really a good idea and could sell a lot, you have to worry about someone making it in another country. Because most patents normally only cover you in the country you live in.I belive worldwide is a whole other bag of beans.

The reason I know this is because my cousin came up with a idea, spent the money testing it, making a demo product, dealing with the lawyers and when he applied for the patent, they didn't give it to him. My cousin spent tens of thousands of dollars on this ,all to end up nowhere. So good luck.

Thank you for the warning, Crockett, but I have a feeling that my idea, if proven as impressive as I think it to be, gets somewhere, money will not be an issue In this new world of technology and the internet, transactions are more and more commonly made in the tens of millions, and you don't even see it, it goes into some swiss bank, and you end up using it on the market, money is not what it used to be.

    Thanks,

    Mike

I have a family member who recently has gotten several patents. Check out his web page, and feel free to email him. He will be able to tell you exactly what it takes to get a patent.

    It took him 6+months
