Lightbulb Richard_Cranium72 , shall his name ride off into the sunset?

Lo there all, DrVette here. New name, same face and to Warthog(my favorite Jet) yes I've went off, years ago. Anywhoo, Since we got our all BS column here, How about Ole Richard Cranium, I've been griping to some about the senior status. If you hold the title of "Senior" at a "IT Professionals" site, you better have your stuff together. To the point, ole R.Cranium had 499 posts till Scotts thread here(which wasn't supposed to count) tripped him over. I know, I know where am I going with this. Say someone comes here outta the blue needing some serious doo doo fast and gets one of our whiz bang "senior" members with two months time and limited knowledge of what's going on(like ME) I admit many junior members are super smart, but you gotta admit, would you take ole Richard Craniums advice on fooling around with the registry? I sure wouldn't , and That is my point, Shall Richard Cranium die an honorable death, or continue onward as one held in status of senior, which is a falsehood or possibly a pseudonym, I forget. Well, I've been pondering the situation for a while, I do really feel inadequate as what the whole title entails, MAN, So much drivel, I need a bib.. later DrVette

Ahhhh, another follower of the A-10! Welcome to my elite club. Members: 2

Anyway, Richie, I have to say, as a new "Ultimate" member, nothing has changed. The bathrooms aren't better, no one bows down to you and I never got my rocking chair .

Ultimatememberdom is not what it's cracked up to be. Seniormemberdom isn't either.

I think he could live on! Just if your not sure of your answer or there is a chance that what your suggesting could cause them even more grief tell them that your not sure! I do all the time. In computer troubleshooting there is usually no set way to fix everything!!

I hate to bust anyone's bubble, but I have looked at the Technical Forum and even put in my two cents on a problem or two, and from what *I* can tell, the people there, whether old or new, are looking for answers that make sense (to them) and could care less whether that answer is offered by a junior member or an ultimate.

In fact, if you want to take that gold-plated shine off whatever title you hold, all you REALLY have to do is jump into solution-seeking threads with "Well, I run Windows ME, and I never have that problem".

But if you point someone to a possibility, a plausible review of steps to take, a thread where a similar solution was sought and found, just SEE if the user will not jump with joy.

If I ever meet anyone on here who won't take my advice because they are waiting for a Senior or Ultimate, I'll let you know.

Am I ever afraid my advice is NOT AS GOOD as others here might be able to offer? Absolutely, Richard, all the time. In fact, in many of my posts, I preface what I say with "Just a guess" or "I'm sure someone can tell you all the possibilities better than me, but here is one you might try".

But I go try to help people ANYWAY because I know what its like to ask for help, and no one answers, or even bothers to ask more, or involve themselves in a problem that they may understand, but isn't their own.

I know you, too, DrCorvette, are one who doesn't mind giving a bit of your time, patience and attention to people in need.

I'm not a professional, just an enthusiast, and maybe everyone who gets advice from me should see a Warning Label: "Does Not Do This Professionally". But you know what? I learn a great deal from both doing, and being here where many others are ALSO doing-- it rubs off (REALLY).

As active as you are, Richard_Cranium72, DrVette, etc, I know your store of knowledge is both growing and helping, and that's what it's about.

If you do help others, you SHOULD, in my opinion, have a title or a fireworks display or Something, just because you have a track record of CARING and thoughtful input.

Or perhaps you should think of the title in terms of a Purple Heart; you survived a couple of months of THIS! Of reading polemics and feuds and Mr. Wizard sessions and posters whose command of the language is faltering at best, of the occasional BBS-anarchist and self-appointed skeptics, of testing threads whose titles sounded more interesting than the participants took them to be. Overall, you have to admit, it takes a bit of work and stick-to-it-iveness to get the gold herein, (true of any collective effort) but it's way worth it all.

Just my opinion, DrVette, but what I see in the Forums here are a group of people, some who have been here a week, some a year, who like looking over the shoulders of other people, and a lot of people who appreciate it and INVITE you to have a look.

They will invite your input just as much if your title is Junior, so you can do what you want in that area, as long as we who have adopted SysOpt as a "community" can count you among us.

I see the title of Senior or Ultimate, and it DOES mean something to me. I know that these are the Joes and Janes who have been here, and WILL be here, when I need them or want to challenge them or just sit back and enjoy them.

I also have to say that nothing feels better than having a certified "Old One" { } from here to say "Attaboy!" on occasion-- treasures I shall always value.

So maybe you feel you belong to the old crew, or maybe you feel you should not. I think you oughta-- SysOpt is shaped in part by you.

I never want to post just to post or increase my count (and some get too sensitive about all that), but I for one was happy to actually feel myself a "member"-- and will indeed feel "Senior" whenever that time comes.

    I must also say:

Very well put, Glynn, and right-on-the-money as well.

I know I don't prejudice a status when I get a reply to a problem - I consider all replies. And it's also true that if any member knows a better/correct way of doing something - that will get posted as well.

I feel in very good hands here when I need help!

I pay very little to the status, I've gotten great advice from junior members on up to ultimates.

Although, when I went from junior to member, my wife figured we should celebrate by carpeting the bathroom. She's wanted to for years cuz her feet get cold on those winter mornings here. I agreed it was time to do it and even better I suggested that we not only carpet the bathroom but carpet from the house TO the bathroom

Keep the status DrVette, you deserve it.

    Lol, DrCorvette;
When I wrote you that "If I ever meet anyone on here who won't take my advice because they are waiting for a Senior or Ultimate, I'll let you know", I SHOULD HAVE GUESSED that it wouldn't be 12 hours until someone posted a line to force this disclosure:

Surely you heard me wince at the mere suggestion of doing anything other than reviving this Win95 install! I will NEVER hear the end of it if ANYTHING is any different. Now I'm wondering if I'll even be able to put the old system back together the way it was. Why I took the chance to do it is a long(er) story but it's done and I would really like to, no, NEED TO save it if AT ALL possible. I've been hoping one of our "Ultimate Member"s would chime in and save the day, not that you guys haven't been helpful. And believe me, I do appreciate it immensely.
Now, this guy is reaching panic mode, with over seventeen replies to the threads he started before and now during his mobo upgrade... I don't blame him for hoping an Ultimate will come along to save the day.

But let me say that whatever happens, I'll be tuned in (though I don't seem to meet his criteria of expertise). And, if I can offer a suggestion, I'll do it. And none of what Toad6147 has said changes my arguments above.

You see, he HAS listened to, and sometimes followed, what advice has come his way, as it seemed to make sense or fit his situation. Even from lowly me!!! And his panic is not a result of the contributions "over his shoulder"... but rather from A LACK OF ACCEPTABLE OPTIONS.

By the way, if any of you Ultimates want to strut your stuff, here is the thread: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/For...ML/008044.html

It's not like a doctor or a mechanic or an IT guy who can waltz in and say, I'll fix this, and will do no harm in the process. It's more like a guy whose wife is in troubled labor on a transoceanic flight, and the towers at Heathrow and LaGuardia are relaying instructions for a Cesearian.

The info may not meet the situation as he sees it; it may come late or early; it may trouble him to listen to a traffic controller who takes his info and condenses it, leaving out something the man believes is relevant (whether it is or not). He may not even know the anatomical terms for what he sees. Isn't there a Doctor in the House?

But DrVette, should any of us Non-Ultimates (or Non-Seniors or...) hold back our free advice (what of it there is)? Oh, or wait, maybe, for a third call for help on the assumption that the Ultimates have read it and decided it was not a case worthy of their attention?

If you hold the title of "Senior" at a "IT Professionals" site, you better have your stuff together.
Your lack of enthusiasm for accepting the title of "Senior" seems to be based on the belief that you cannot advise people at a level required by, or implied by, the title.

Wonder what a Senior at a site like you describe would say. Would he ever royally deign to reply?

These "pros" would wimp out-- you know they would. Their Reputation/Title might be tarnished if they approached such a potentially "dangerous" post. (Why, point out that the young man's lack of options comes from an "obsolete OS" and "case closed").

Real problems deserve real answers from real people in real time. Toad6147 is getting those, in my humble opinion. And I have no doubt he WILL get where he needs to go, unless he himself quits or does in frustration what no "pro" would advise.

In the meantime, help may arrive, and it may come from you, or me, or a junior member arriving at SysOpt for the first time today. Should Toad6147 wait for that junior member to prove his credentials in mobo replacement, maybe submit his MCSE or resume as proof that he can help?

You HAVE proof that you have helped at least some people on here. It's in your posts, over 500 of which can be searched on. In fact, going to "cranium" and Technical Support, I see 126 posts there alone. I look at your first WEEK's worth, and here is what I see:

You have experience personally with Win95, 98, 98SE. You run NT at work. You have an HP Pavilion, as do two of your relations, and have grappled with a Compaq, and you also got a barebones system up. You solved problems along this road dealing with Dial-Up Networking and bad RAM. You know about dumping cookies when a website is acting aloof, the procedure for setting up USB, and you run graphics apps like Microsoft PictureIt and Corel 8/Photopaint.

Well, that is a week's worth of posts, the first dozen or so of 500, a resume worthy of "Senior" status in MY opinion. These are the posts that don't give a picture of your experience? C'mon. Don't be so bashful.

LOL, Cranium, ya waiting for a discount at the local Luby's cafeteria?

Chip, I have heard rumors about the breakroom and it's gold plated expresso machine and the bagel slicer that can split 6 bagels at a time, but I thought they were just rumors...

Doc, you just use whatever name YOU'RE comfortable with, and the member status it holds.

    Let's see...

    DrCorvette 126 posts, member
    theCorvetteDoctor 75 posts, member
    corvettedoctor 30 posts, junior member
    And of course,
    Richard_Cranium72

Whatever you want, long as WE know who it is!
    (Did I miss any?? )

Personally, I think you deserve the "ultimate" tag. But it's your call.
