Petrol Prices.......again

I know that a thread has been started on this, but I just thought I would let you moaning yanks know that it has ben announced that very shortly we (in the UK) will be charged £1 a litre.

This is getting stupidly high, with at least 85% of the price going in tax to the penny piching theiving bar-stewards that call themselves "The British Government"

Not good at all... I am running a 2.8l engine with an average 27 miles/gal... not good at all... nope...

I found the petrol so cheap when I was in Spain...

£1/litre? OMFG!!! Did they not learn from the trucker's protest a couple of yeard ago?? It seems that the government is not only trying to shaft the motorist (well, that's always been the easy target!), but also totally screw up out trucking businesses. It's simple... they'll just go under. There's no way they'll be able to compete with European haulage companies.

Did they say that diesel will go up by the same amount, too?? (hmmmm.... hoping not 'cos I drive a diesel!!).

Let's face it - the government will always milk the cash cows! Take cigarettes £4.20/pack of 20. Now, the govt say that they want to reduce smoking - it's bad for us and the NHS has to pick up the medical bill...... BUT: cigarettes cost the health service £1bn/year...... and they make the gonv £7bn/year. So, the question is what would they do if no-one smoked?

And then there's 'Two Jags' Prescott! Mr 'do as I say, not as I do'. Ignorant to$$er! Let me see... public transport, eh? What is that exactly? There's a ****, overpriced, overburdened private transport system that the public are allowed on for a fee.

I would love to show these ignorant politicians just how inadequate 'public transport' is! Imagine if everybody who commuted to work in a car, used 'public transport', just for one day... The country would grind to a halt! It really p!sses me off when I see those ignorant advertisements on the side of buses 'this bus can take 60 cars off the road' Really? have they seen the buses in the rush hour?? How can the bus take 60 cars off the road if it's already full? I'd like to see the smart-***** politician's answer to that!!

I think what the govt is trying to do (other than get lots more money) is to make cars as slow and expensive as 'public transport' in an attempt to get more people to use it, rather than inproving conditions. We need more trains and more buses at the peak hour times. Simple. But that's not going to happen whilst the bus and train companies are privately run for the shareholder - they're hardly going to build loads more trains, just for them to run for ~3 hrs/day during the peak hours.

I wrote a college economics paper on this very issue, the benefit of smoking, about 12 years ago.

It seems tht the reduction of smoking here in the US is one of the big reasons why social security is on shaky ground. Years ago when more people smoked many put into the system for years and never lived long enough to take a dime out.

Sure the government spent a little more on health care but its not supported to nearly the extent it is in Europe and individuals were putting in far more than the government was helpign them in their last few months.

Well, it has now been decided that the UK should "Dump The Pump" on the 1st August and then every Monday after that to prove a point, although I don't really understand what it will achieve.

We Canadians are paying dearly at the pumps too. Rumor has it that we will soon be at or over the 80 cents/L mark. This time last year the price was between .45 and .55!

Minnesota Gov. Jesse Ventura is calling for a one-day boycott to protest high gasoline prices.
The pro wrestler-turned-politician told ABC's "Good Morning America" Wednesday that he doesn't know if price gouging is responsible for sending pump prices to record levels in recent weeks. But he said at the least "someone wasn't paying attention."
Ventura urged motorists to "take it out on the gas companies." He said:
"You know what I'd like to see? Nobody in the Midwest purchase a dime of gasoline and throw that back at the oil companies for a change."

But like you said, what's the point? It doesn't hurt the oil companies, OPEC, or even the local gas stations. They don't care if I buy gas on Monday, Tuesday, or any other day of the week. Unless my total consumption goes down, they still get paid the same.
