just heard it from the news. They will have it on FOX 11 (L.A.,california) on channel 11. They news for it will be on 10 o'clock! PST. Can't wait to hear about it. They sed it's a big breakthrough since the man walked on the moon.

Yep, the implications are huge. At first, we'll be able to know if we're likely to develop specific disorders (and treat them before they occur, or have tests more frequently to stay on top of them). Then later, as gene therapy comes of age, we may be able to correct many disorders genetically before or after their onset (or develop better drugs). I don't think the discovery will yield immediate benefits, but the years to come will be very interesting indeed.

And the cops will arrest you BEFORE you commit a crime because you have a specific genetic mutation that links you to criminal behavior. Think about it. Talk about invasion of privacy. There will be no privacy. Instead of a social security # the gov. will have a genetic profile of everybody.

Maybe, but I'd trade a bit of privacy for a better life. Bypass surgery before you have a heart attack, blood pressure medicine before you get high blood pressure, breast exams, colon exams, CT's, MRI's, before you develop growths/Cancer. The trick will be to keep the personal data secret, somehow.

Oh...I think the knowledge of genetics is awesome, and in no way shape or form will anyone be able to tell if you are going to be a criminal or not, so don't worry about that.

If I had Cancer, or perhaps a likely chance of developing it, I would let the whole world know about it if it meant being able to get rid of it and live. That would be the only privacy lost: that others might know of our weaknesses. But if those genes can in fact be altered, it doesn't much matter because they won't be weaknesses for long.

I think society's biggest fear should be that there will be favoritism to those who are more physically healthy, or inclined to be healthy... favoritism in the workplace, on sports teams, etc... and ... did I mention the workplace (salaries, length of employment, etc.)

Only time will tell how we will keep this our own information (if we even get it ourselves).
