do we really need all these garbage threads??
i mean they only exist because people want to get a higher rating
i now that some of you agree with me on this one

It depends what "garbage threads" means. Discussions about patriotism, etc. are..."acceptable" I suppose but they tend to push the help threads downward quickly so that they go unnoticed. Other threads about what size shoe do you wear, what do you eat, etc. are kinda stupid, although I've responded to them.

I have to admit that there were kinda much topics on wars lately!!!
Okay, you can ask what someone feels about it, but then make another post about civil war instead of normal war??!!!
And yet another person starting a whole new topic about what he thinks about war and such things!!!
In that, I simply must agree with ya Skywalker!!!
Keep us safe from these kinda topics!!!
May the force be with ya on that one!!!LOL

the thing is, this thread itself could be considered a "junk" thread. Anyways, all the help things are in the tech support section.

This seems to be debated a few times every month. Do a search on OT, garbage post, post count etc. Jusy let it slide. No harm no foul. No real way to regulate it without ruffling some feathers. The powers that be keep things running pretty smoothly.

You mean, all the hardware issues, etc. are in the tech support section. There are other problems that have to be addressed.
Some examples: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/For...ML/007015.html
suggestions for hardware http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/For...ML/007029.html
The following thread made me write what I wrote above: http://sysopt.earthweb.com/forum/For...ML/007014.html

Last night I got on Sysopt and there were several threads with answerable questions that were unanswered while the 'war' threads were getting all the attention. I think this is getting out of hand and it is really detracting from the site overall. I used to really enjoy the General Forum b/c I could learn new stuff with an off-topic once in a while.
Scott-
I know you have been asked before, but I really hope you are considering an off-topic forum. This would get the non-'puter related stuff off the general forum and make things easy for everyone. Those who want to discuss politics or news can go there and check things out without detering from those who need help and could care less about such things at that moment. I for one, would spend time in an OT forum, but would also spend more time in the Gen Forum if it were less cluttered.
I know you have your hands full though. I am not trying to be overcritical, but I believe it is time to do something about this before members quit coming here.

..........I get all my off topic from other message boards....But then again im being hypocritical since I posted in almost all of the war threads. I would love it personally if sysopt never had an off topic forum, just so it would only members who are serious about computer questions....
and while youa re all here why doesnt somoene go answer my question about what a pagefile.sys is in windows 2000...I already found the answer but hey see if you can help me learn more.

NO offense.... but I think this is exactly what u mean... this is a PERFECT EXAMPLE OF A "garbage tread"

"General" Discussion to me means just that...GENERAL. Could be baseball, armageddon, or plumbers. Who cares? If you are complaining that questions aren't being answered, then answer them. If you notice that someone has gone unhelped, then help. How does this post help those you say need it?
The reason all of the "garbage" threads are taking up all of the posts is because--HELLO--people seem to enjoy it. The proof is in the number of responses they get.
I do agree with an off topic forum though. That would make a BIG difference.

the OT forum seems to be the best idea.

An OT forum that doesn't count towards total number of messages would be good. Or if you really wanted to make it complicated have a *real* post count and an OT forum post count...ha, that could be funny.
There's a couple members that seam to reply only, and to EVERY OT thread...no matter how silly or short their reply is. It doesn't personaly bother me...It just inudates the board with "****" and sets the tone for everyone else that doesn't know better. I see it just getting worse as time goes on.

I just thought I would drop in and up my post count .
You all just don't get it. They are not going to do what you are asking. It has been brought up many times and always ends the same.
