A question about Windows 2000 upgrade , please help ASAP !
I did the upgrade of my Compaq Pentium PC with a 4GB hard drive (with 4 partitions) from Window 95 OSR2 (FAT) to Windows 2000 (NTFS)yesterday. However, I find out this morning I run into TWO problems after performing the upgrade.
#1: When I boot up my computer, instead of go straight into the Win 2k windows, it gives me a dual boot screen menu with 2 choices (MS Win2k Professional and MS Windows). That should not happen ...
#2: Most of the software applications are not working any more. (most of them are installed onto the D drive partition or e drive partition with Windows 98 before the upgrade). Even though I can open them, but gives me a bunch of dll / registry pop up errors.
So I would know to know if I want to prevent the same thing happen when I do the Win95 /98 upgrade to Win 2k Pro for another machine with similar configuration, what do I have to do to achieve the following :
(1) Get rid of Win 95 / 98 and does not gives me the dual boot screen and let me go right into win2k after the upgrade.
(2) Ensure all the software apps will be working in Win 2k after the upgrade, so I don't have to re-install all the apps all over again.
Any suggestion or ideas to solve this problem will be highly appreciated in advance.
Please advise ASAP.
Ok I am not exactly sure of your problem, but it sounds like you did a Clean Install of Win2K.
This would explain the Dual boot menu and it would also explain why the programs will not run correctly in 2K, because they need to be reinstall so the registry knows what the heck to do with them.
The solution is to start 98 .. place the win2K CD in and wait for autorun. When it runs it should ask you right off the bat that this cd contains a newer version of windows and would you like to upgrade. And then follow from there. I hope that helps. Let me know if you need any more help.
In fact, I did not do the Clean Install and when I put in my Win2k Cd, I did pic the option of upgrtade to Win2k. So may I know what did I do wrong ????
Ok, here is the deal.
You can not upgrade from windows 95/98 to windows 2000. you can only dual boot or do a fresh install.
you can only upgrade to 2k if you are running a version of NT because 2k is based on NT.
The only thing you can use to upgrade without having to reinstall your apps is windows me.
so basically what I am saying is its either dual boot or format and then install.
here is how you do each of these.
when it asks if you want to upgrade, click no
then click install 2000. Go through the install process and it will eventualy give you a screen that says somthing to the effect of, (win2k found another operating system installed on your hard drive. Would you like to keep the OS intact?) and if you want to dual boot then you would say yes, if you want to get rid of your old os then you would say no.
You have to be careful though because it has a option before this that says basicaly the same thing but it says that it found another file system, refering to fat 32 and if you say no here your system will be converted to ntfs.
My wording is no where close to a T but you will recognize the messages when they pop up.
Hope this helps.
Kirk, sorry to tell you but that is incorrect. I just did about 15 Win98 to Win2K upgrades. You do not have to be running an NT system to upgrade to Win2K
Gomcse, hmmm I am perplexed bud. I am not sure, like I said I have done my own personal machine upgrade, which I did a clean Install and go the exact "symptoms"
you describe. Plus I just did about 15 Win98 to Win2k upgrades. No dual boot, boots right into 2k, no need to reinstall most software. I am sorry I couldn't be of more help. Hopefully somone else has some ideas.
Just to clarify, when you upgraded to W2K, was this Server or Pro??
W2K Server cannot upgrade 98, Pro can.
eweruk, might have it, have never done a 98 to Server up or clean install .. or whatever it allows you to do.
You must have chose a different dir to install win2000 than the one win 98 was in.
Kirk6677 - I agree w/ undeadlord, as I have done this to a few machines without problems.
(win2kPRO that is)I doubt Server will work
Im thinking the same thing as "jbyron"
You must have chose a different dir to install win2000 than the one win 98 was in
Just edit the BOOT.INI file in your root.
Delete the lines for other os's that are no longer installed.
Change the "timeout" string to "0" also.
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINNT="Microso ft Windows 2000 Professional" /fastdetect
If win2k is the only os on the computer, then this is what your boot.ini file should look like.
This will fix the dual boot problem, as for your apps, my experience has been to reinstall the apps, but during the install, put them in the same place ie. e:\program files\"program" etc. This way you don't lose any new folders created in that app and they will work.
